MONARCH MANIA
September is Monarch season, and Geauga Park District is offering programs to connect with this incredible insect on its long journey to overwintering grounds in Mexico.
At Monarchs and Meadow Insects, a park naturalist will provide an overview of some of the meadow insects at 12:30 p.m., followed by netting in surrounding fields from 1-4 p.m. Drop in anytime to Frohring Meadows on Sept. 10, and to Orchard Hills Park on Sept. 17.
Activities will include netting and tagging live monarchs, playing a “life-sized board game” dramatizing the hazards of such a long migration and catching a variety of other butterflies, grasshoppers and insects.
Nets will be provided, or you may bring your own. Sun protection, socks, hats and long pants are strongly recommended. Registration is not required.
Also, a special Senior Day: Monarch Migration is scheduled at Orchard Hills Park on Sept. 14, from 9 a.m. to noon. Seniors may register now at www.geaugaparkdistrict.org or 440-286-9516 for a pancake breakfast, followed by monarch education and tagging if conditions are right. Tours of the trail will also be given on the EZ Go Cart.
EXPLORING FOR TREASURES
Geauga County is bursting with hidden gems to explore.
The Hidden Gems Hike series returns with a visit to The West Woods on Sept. 16, from 2-4 p.m. Hike two miles over hilly terrain to the historic Ansel’s Cave to discover its secrets – no advanced registration required.
Search for monarchs with one’s dog during the Hound Hike on Sept. 10, 5-6:30 p.m. at Frohring Meadows. Registration is required.
Only one non-aggressive dog is allowed per handler, who must be able to fully control the dog at all times on a leash no longer than eight feet. Participants must also bring their own dog towels, water bowls, and scoops and bags for cleanup.
Camp The Geauga County Parks
Camping out in four different parks within the Geauga Park District promises quality down time with friends and family. Cost is just $5 a night for county residents or $10 a night for out of county residents.
Big Creek Park, Headwaters Park and Chickagami Park all offer clean, well-maintained, reservable campsites in scenic locations. These include lean-tos, each with a fireplace in the chimney, which can accommodate up to five people, and tent pads, which provide comfortable, well-drained surfaces for tents.
Two brand new tent pads were also added this year in primitive, off-the-beaten-trail locations within The West Woods.
Camping reservations must be made at least seven days in advance of the visit. Non-reserved campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis.
