Recycled Art Exhibition Returns

Back by popular demand, the discARTed Recycled Art Exhibition will return to Geauga County from Jan. 26 through March 31 and kicks off with an all-ages exhibition opening Jan. 26 from 2-4 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road, Russell Township.

Join participating regional artists to view their unique artwork created from discarded material and enjoy live music and refreshments.

Geauga Park District’s first discARTed exhibit, which ran November 2009 through January 2010 and showcased more than 100 artists and 200 pieces, attracted close to 10,000 visitors and amped up awareness of sustainability and recycling on a regional level.

The exhibition will run daily through March 31 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Worn And Re-Worn

Trash to Treasure: Jewelry from Recycled Materials takes place Jan. 23 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road, Russell Township.

With the guidance of Maryann Sedivy, participants will design and create earrings, a bracelet or a necklace from recycled materials in tribute to the “discARTed” Recycled Art Exhibition, running Jan. 26 through March 31 at The West Woods.

Registration is required for this program, which costs $12 for instruction and materials. Participants may also bring found objects to enhance their designs.

Attract Wildlife To Your Yard

Allow professional gardener Penny Orr to share all her secrets about good gardening and name some native plants that would attract more species of birds and other wildlife to area yards.

Planting for Wildlife is Jan.20 from 3:30-4:30 p.m. at The West Woods Nature Center, 9465 Kinsman Road, Russell Township.

Penny is a lifelong gardener, co-founder of Perennials Preferred, Inc., in Chesterland, and a past president of the Audubon Society of Greater Cleveland. On her company’s website, she’s also described as a designer of English and shrub borders, shade, butterfly, bird, herb, rock, wall and trough gardens as well as patio plantings. Visit perennials

Chardon Accepting Field Applications

The City of Chardon Park and Recreation Department will be accepting applications for the use of the baseball fields at Mel Harder Park until Jan. 25.

2013 Ohio Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Camp Scholarship

The Geauga Soil and Water Conservation District (SWCD) is offering scholarship funding for the 2013 Ohio Forestry and Wildlife Conservation Camp, held June 9-13 at FFA Camp Muskingum in Carroll County.

Sponsored by the Ohio Forestry Association, the weeklong camp for high school students explores many branches of forest ecology including silviculture, tree identification, wildlife and forestry management and forest products. Campers have the opportunity to learn first-hand about Ohios forests and natural resources through challenging and engaging activities, woodland hikes, demonstrations and outdoor experiences taught by resource professionals.

Situated on Leesville Lake, Camp Muskingum provides clean, comfortable accommodations and delicious meals, along with diverse recreational activities including volleyball, swimming, fishing, and boating. Special evening programs are planned for social as well as academic value. Theres fun for everyone, plus college scholarship and career interest opportunities.

Applicants must be current Geauga County residents and enrolled in high school at the time of camp, including those about to enter freshman year and recently graduated seniors. To apply, applicants must complete the Geauga SWCD Scholarship Application Form.

DIY Plumbing Seminar

The Joint Park and Recreation Committee (JPARC), a volunteer group that covers all communities that are part of Chardon Local School District, is offering a free do-it-yourself plumbing seminar to residents within the school district on Feb. 4 from 7-8:30 p.m. at Chardon Middle School south entrance room 222.

Experts will provide simple fix-its for the homeowner and teach money saving tips. The JPARC will hold future free seminars on a variety of topics.
