Community Picnic

We couldn’t have had a more beautiful day. The crowd was bigger than any I can remember in years past and it sure seemed like everyone was having a great time. Wonder if more people came because it was Hambden’s 30th anniversary? The signs at the developments were a great help, too.

I really think it was the special edition of the Hambden Highlights the picnic flyer that went out to everyone the week before the picnic that helped. The credit for that can only go to township administrative assistant Mary Ann Dottore. Mary Ann came to me with the idea and completely handled it on her own. It looked great and we want to thank her so much for all of her extra hard work to get it done and out to everyone on time.

There are so many other people who made this picnic happen. First, let’s thank everyone who donated items to the Chinese auction. We’ll be sending a letter out to you all, but I wanted to make sure you know how much your donations were appreciated.

The four original members of the

picnic committee were honored at the picnic. They are Barb Ianiro, Nancy O’Reilly, Patty Osredkar and Darlene Welch. Only Nancy and Patty were able to attend, but we wanted to thank them all for starting the community picnic tradition.

Thanks also to everyone on the current committee who worked so hard and came up with some really great new ideas for this year. The chairman this year was Joyce Edelinsky. She kept everyone going to make sure things happened and took care of so much of the running for prizes and supplies. Jamie Henderson and Jamie Thobe headed up the kids games and brought in help for sand art and arranged for the photo booth. Helen Scheuring found many great donations and helped with the Chinese auction all during the picnic. Patty Osredkar put together and wrapped many of the beautiful baskets for the Chinese auction.

Township firefighters cooked for us and handled the bakery walk. Dale Smith handled the great video of picnics past that ran during the entire picnic. Only bad part was that we could really see how much we had all aged. Darlene Welch also got many wonderful donations and took care of the great cupcakes.

Thanks to Kim Fox for all of her help with the Chinese auction organization and ticket sales. Thanks to Barb Palmer and the Hambden Grange for their auction donations, the wonderful ice cream treats they sold at the picnic and for finding the Red Dust Mountain Boys to play at the picnic. They were great. Lauri Zampino was always there to help organize and help with cupcakes at the picnic. Thanks also to everyone who sold tickets and helped with the set-up, popcorn and sno cones.

Road department employees Dave Heald, Dan Brazis, Rich Edelinsky, Barry Bishop and Eric Germovsek took care of making sure the park was in beautiful shape for the picnic. They also hauled all of the picnic stuff over to the park. Laura Chorman’s beautiful veterans’ quilt made Alex Thomas’ day when he won it at the picnic. Thank you, Laura, for all of you hard work.

Trustee Keith McClintock made sure the Chinese auction went smoothly. The only problem was people who wanted to buy tickets after we were done selling. Sorry if you didn’t get to participate. We tried to keep announcing the time we were stopping.

It was a beautiful afternoon and I’m so sorry if I have missed thanking anyone. Thank you so much to everyone who helped. We’ll let you know when we start to meet to organize the 31st picnic.

Fall Trash Day

Start planning ahead and gathering all of unwanted items for the Fall Trash Day at the township park on Sept. 26 from 8 a.m. to noon. Again this fall, the township will have a shredding truck on site. No yard waste, garbage, paint or hazardous chemicals will be accepted.

For specific questions, call the township hall at 440-286-4364.

Township Meetings

Hambden Township Board of Trustees meets on the first and third Wednesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. at the township hall. Trustees value the residents’ input and hope that they will attend the meetings.

Now that this years’ paving project has been completed, the road crew is busy working on roadside mowing, the township park and road patching projects. If anyone has any questions or concerns, we really want to hear from you and want you to know that we are doing all we can to make your township a great place for you to live.

The next project is construction of a salt storage shed, which will allow us to buy much larger quantities of salt at a much lower price and make sure there is always enough on hand when needed. Salt can be very hard to get if you run low in the middle of winter. Construction should begin in late August.
