Help for Mental Illness

Geauga County National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) offers support, education and advocacy for those affected by mental illness. Programs meet at the NAMI Geauga office located at 8389 Mayfield Road, Suite A-2 in Chester Township.

The Mental Health First Aid training program on April 6 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. teaches how to identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders. Cost is $40 and includes all materials and meals.

Family-to-Family is a free evidenced-based program for family members, significant others and friends of individuals living with mental illness. The 12-week class will meet Mondays, beginning April 15, from 6-8:30 p.m.

St. Mark Lutheran Church is sponsoring a free health clinic with University Hospitals at the church located at 11900 Chillicothe Road, Chester Township. Everyone is invited.

The Teen Vaping Trend

April 16, 7 p.m. 

West Geauga High School is hosting The Facts You Should Know About the Risks and Health Implications of Vaping and E-Cigarettes.” There will be a panel presentation with Dr. Ellen Rome, director of adolescent health at the Cleveland Clinic, sharing opening remarks and joined by WGHS Principal Jay Bishop; Matt Petersen, Lake-Geauga Recovery; and high school students. The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session.

Next Step Wine Tasting Fundraiser

April 27, 6:30-9 p.m.

The Next Step Advisory Board, a nonprofit organization formed to support and transition at-risk youth ages 18 to 24, is hosting a wine tasting fundraiser at Colonial Wine & Beverage, 8389 Mayfield Road in Chester Township. A buffet dinner will be served and raffle baskets will be available, as well as a 50/50 raffle.

NAMI Geauga Seeks Volunteers

NAMI Geauga is seeking volunteers during the Geauga County Maple Festival April 25-28 to distribute materials, visit with others, talk about NAMI, hand out prizes and/or walk in the parade to support those affected by mental health. Call 440-286-6264 to volunteer.
