Government
Trustees meetings are held on the first and third Tuesdays of each month at 7 p.m. at the town hall.
All township meetings are open to the public and residents are encouraged to attend. Call 440-636-5486 for more information. The next meeting is Nov. 17.
Mailboxes
The township policy on replacing mailboxes is only to replace boxes that have been struck by the plow or truck. Mailboxes that go down due to heavy snow will not be replaced.
Boxes are replaced with an inexpensive, simple type box only. Please consult one’s postmaster for regulation regarding the installation of a mailbox.
Driveway Culverts
Landowners have the responsibility to keep their driveway culvert clean and free of debris. The biggest assistance a resident can be to the township is to make sure the driveway culvert is clean. Cleaning out one’s culvert will allow for the continuous flow of water through the ditches and will aid to control flooding.
Fire Department
On July 20, the Middlefield Fire Department was evaluated by auditors from the Insurance Services Office (ISO). ISO grades fire departments nationwide and the rating they assign is then used by insurance companies to determine the fire insurance premiums paid by commercial and residential properties. The grading system assigns a numerical grade between 1 and 10 to a department, with “1” being the absolute best rating possible and “10” representing no fire protection, often due to being too far from a firehouse.
At the time of the last rating in May 2000, the department was rated as a “5” in Middlefield Village and areas of Middlefield Township within 1,000 feet of a water source. Huntsburg Township was rated as a “9” at that time.
We have just received the results of the latest grading, and we would like to share them with residents, business owners and Facebook friends. In Middlefield Village and areas of the township within 1,000 feet of a water supply, our new Public Protection Class is a “3.” In Huntsburg Township, our new PPC is an “8B.”
These new PPCs take effect on Jan. 1. Residents and property owners are encouraged to contact their insurance agents, as the improved PPC may result in savings on one’s fire insurance premiums.
On behalf of the fire chief and all of the members of the Middlefield Fire Department, we would like to thank our communities for their continued support of our efforts to improve the fire department. We also must thank all of our automatic aid fire departments (Burton, Hambden, Mesopotamia, Montville, Parkman and Windsor) for their assistance and commitment to the joint training necessary to work together as one team.
