GSWCD Rain Barrel Auction

The annual Rain Barrel Auction, sponsored by the Geauga Soil & Water Conservation District, is now underway with weatherproofed rain barrels painted by local artists. Munsonite Mary Samide, a very talented artist who has participated in this fundraising event for a number of years, has her contribution, “Follow the Yellow Brick Road,” on display at Bean’s Coffee Shop during August and Munson Country Store in September.

Bids start at $90 or “Buy it now” at $200.

Ursuline College Art Exhibit

The interesting watercolors by Eliot O’Hara are now on display at Ursuline College’s Florence O’Donnell Gallery, 2550 Lander Road, Pepper Pike. O’Hara was a self-taught artist, teacher, traveler and writer.

The exhibit remains on display through Sept. 3. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Friday, 12-5 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, 1:30-4:30 p.m.

Celebrate Recovery

Morning Star Friends Church, 12550 Ravenna Road, Munson, will hold the next meeting of the Christian 12-step recovery program at 7.p.m. Aug. 26.

The free weekly meetings offer help and encouragement to those seeking to overcome any addiction. There will be fellowship and a meal served at 6:15 p.m.

Dr. Mark Jamba, DVM, will speak on diseases and illnesses that puzzled our ancestors at the next meeting of the Geauga County Genealogical Society (GCGS) at 7 p.m. Sept. 8 in the Bostwick Room of the Chardon Library.

WomenSafe Wine Tasting

The Friends of WomenSafe (FOW), an all-volunteer organization, will hold its annual wine and cheese tasting fundraiser on Sept. 17, from 6-9 p.m., at the Sharon James Cellars, 11303 Kinsman Road, Newbury.

There will be hearty appetizers, a variety of domestic wines, chocolates, cheeses, a Chinese auction, 50/50 raffle, wine pull and music by Vince Menti.

Cost is $35 per person with wine or $25 per person without wine.

Proceeds benefit the services and accommodations offered to victims of violence and abuse at WomenSafe’s Green House on Ravenna Road in Munson.

A Special Widow’s Retreat

A two-day event of rest and relaxation, “A Widow’s Retreat,” will be held from noon Sept. 29 through 1:30 p.m. Sept. 30 at the Bethany Retreat House, Notre Dame Campus, 13000 Auburn Road, Munson, for women who have lost their husbands for at least one year.

There will be lectures, therapies and art instructions. Cost is $50 for a single room.

Park District Volunteers

The next session of group orientation for prospective Geauga Park District volunteers will be held Sept. 16 from 7-8 p.m. at the Geauga Park District’ West Woods. Holly Sauder, volunteer coordinator, will review the process of becoming “official” and try to match one’s interests with the GPD.
