National Merit Recognition
Juniors Joseph Cermak, Zachary Geizer and Kathleen Moorman have been notified by the National Merit Scholarship Program that they are among the top 50,000 scorers of the more than 1.5 million students who took last fall’s Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT).
Their outstanding performance on the PSAT qualifies them as National Merit commended students, semifinalists or finalists. Those prestigious designations will not be announced until the fall.
Cleveland Clinic Internship
NDCL sophomore Sam Dimmick has been selected for the Cleveland Clinic’s summer internship program in pharmacy. Sam becomes the fifth NDCL student selected this year for a Cleveland Clinic internship.
The intensive, paid internships provide top students throughout northeastern Ohio with the opportunity to work and learn alongside nationally renowned healthcare professionals in a variety of fields. At the end of the program, students present scientific research or creative projects that they produce during their internship experiences.
Hardesty Signs Letter of Intent
Relatives, friends and NDCL staff gathered in McGarry Gym lobby on April 24 as senior Ian Hardesty signed his Division II letter of intent to continue his golf career with the Lake Erie College Storm.
Your Life, Your Choice
NDCL seniors had a hard time attempting to walk a straight line while wearing impaired vision goggles at the Your Life, Your Choice awareness program on April 23 at Solon’s Parkside Church.
In addition to the goggle experiment, students heard real-life scenarios and testimonies of people whose lives have been forever changes by crashes caused by drunk drivers.
Students from schools throughout Lake and Geauga counties attended the OVI (operating vehicle while impaired) awareness program run by local law enforcement agencies to learn about the importance of making smart choices during the prom and graduation season. Assistant Principal Vincent Bonacci initiated NDCL’s participation in the powerful program last year.
College Fair Connections
NDCL freshmen, sophomores and juniors chose to take an important step on the path to college by attending the Jesuit College Fair in Baker Gym on April 25. Admissions counselors from 17 Jesuit colleges met with the students to share academic, extracurricular and scholarship information.
“It was awesome to see so many students initiate conversations with the college representatives. Making these connections is a critical part of the college search process,” said Mrs. Rachel Siegel, director of college, counseling and support services.
Blessing of NDCL Facilities
On April 29, Bishop Roger Gries, OSB, blessed the completion of NDCL’s newest facilities: the Eugene T. Baker Gymnasium, the Pat & Janet O’Brien Center for the Performing Arts and the Mary Garden. The Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin School (NDCL) community, including hundreds of friends, parents, donors, alumni, faculty, students and staff, joined together for the celebration.
“This celebration is a reality for us because of the generosity of our donors,” said President Sr. Jacquelyn Gusdane, SND. “Enhancements to our facilities over the past five years have been and continue to be a community endeavor. The planning, designing, fundraising and financing speak of the commitment of hundreds of supporters to the mission and vision of NDCL.”
Major donors in attendance included Mrs. Victoria Baker, wife of Eugene (’37), and her guests from Florida, West Virginia, Kentucky and Ohio; Pat and Janet O’Brien and their family; Lorraine Dodero, her husband Bill, daughter and son-in-law, Corinne and Nick Salvador (’02); and Carl and Kathleen (’80) Baldassarre.
The day’s events included a Mass at 10 a.m., reception, tour of the new facilities and refreshments.
