Junior high students of St. Mary’s came to school the morning of Jan. 26 to present and defend their scientific research and hypothesis for the school’s science fair. The students presented their findings and conclusions to 26 judges from the community. The judges, all of whom hold a degree in an area of science, volunteered their time to judge.
Mrs. Amber Yeager, the junior high science teacher, prepared the students and organized the event.
“The students researched and worked on this project all semester,” said Mrs. Yeager. “We are proud of all of them and especially of the ones who placed for the next level of competition.”
Fourteen students from St. Mary School will travel to Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls to compete in the next tier of the science fair competitions taking place on Feb. 10. Students Izabella Buzagany, Faith Carey, Erin Eppich, Jamie Fowle, Natalie Kline, Caren Lasota, Kylee Minick, Allie Malloy, Tyler Plants, Brianna Porfilio, Sam Rodriguez, Taylor Tomcany, Sophie Vredenburg and Alyse Zemba won first place ribbons for their individual projects at St. Mary School.
St. Mary School is placing its focus on STEM education. Along with the science fairs, students will be competing in two invitational Science Olympiads in February. The enrichment classes are focusing on engineering studies and skills on the middle school level and beyond. The newly formed Technology Club is learning to communicate in the digital media beyond what is taught in the computer science classes.
“We are striving to promote critical thinking and problem solving skills across the curriculum and co-curriculums,” said Principal Mary Petelin. “St. Mary School strives to prepare students for the next level of their academic journey.”
