Health Care Planning

The Advance Directives Committee of Geauga County Bar Association and Hospice of the Western Reserve will host a free presentation at Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive in Chardon, for Geauga County seniors focusing on healthcare power of attorney, living will declarations and donor registration. Forms will be provided to those in attendance and the committee will work seniors to complete the documents.

Presentations will also be held Oct. 26 from 7:30-8:30 p.m. at the Bainbridge Public Library and Nov. 9 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the West Geauga Senior Center for those who cannot make the September date. For more information, call the Geauga County Department on Aging at 440-279-2130.

Senior Flu Shots

The Geauga County Health Department will be holding flu vaccine clinics at the following Geauga County senior centers.

Chardon Senior Center, Oct. 19, 1-2:30 p.m., Call 440-279-2131 to register.

Middlefield Senior Center, Oct. 17, 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Call 440-632-0611 to register.

Call the Geauga County Health Department at 440-279-1950 for insurance coverage information. If no Insurance and paying by cash, cost is $40, or $60 for high dose flu vaccine.

Seniors can register for the flu vaccine clinics starting on Oct. 3. Deadlines to sign up are Oct. 14 for the Middlefield clinic and Oct. 18 for the Chardon clinic.

Matter Of Balance Class

University Hospitals Geauga Medical Campus, Hospice of the Western Reserve and Geauga Department on Aging are leading Matter of Balance classes to Geauga seniors interested in improving balance, flexibility and strength and in preventing falls.

The classes meet Mondays and Wednesdays, Oct. 3 to Oct. 31, from 1-3 p.m. at the West Geauga Senior Center located in the West Geauga Plaza in Chester Township. Class does not meet Oct. 10.

Seniors will learn to manage concerns about falls as well as set realistic goals for staying active, learn how to stay safe at home, complete exercises to increase strength and balance and learn how to identify and control the fear of falling.

Bainbridge/Chagrin AARP

Oct. 4, 1 p.m.

The Bainbridge/Chagrin AARP 4527 will meet at the Bainbridge Town Hall, 17826 Chillicothe Road. The program includes a CPR demonstration provided by Tom and Jackie Maurer.

After the demonstration and question and answer session, there will be a brief meeting about what AARP will be doing for the rest of the year.

The last trip of the season is to Rivers Casino in Pittsburgh, Pa., on Oct. 26. Cost is $30, with a $20 casino bonus. The group will stop for breakfast on the way but travel straight home on way back. Sign up at the travel table or call Skip or Marge Ference, 440-338-3607.

School supplies and food staples will be collected for the food pantry as well as donations of dog food, hot dogs, blankets and towels for the Geauga County Dog Shelter. Monetary donations for both are also needed. Everyone who donates articles at the door will have his or her name put in a pot for a special drawing

Fighting Against Parkinson’s

Fighting against Parkinson’s is a class for seniors diagnosed with or who have early onset Parkinson’s disease whose symptoms are mild. Offered through the Geauga County Department on Aging, the class will provide non-contact boxing style fitness programs Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:30-11 a.m. at Taekwondo Center, 209 Center St. in Chardon. Monthly fee is $45.

The goal of the program is to delay the progression of Parkinson symptoms. Strength, speed, balance and flexibility will be worked on through a variety of exercises and core conditioning.

Improving overall fitness levels, maintaining a strong healthy body while working on postural imbalances and increasing core strength will be a focus throughout the program.
