  • Low Vision Support Group: Jan. 9, 10 a.m. Ralph Johnson, of the Cleveland Sight Center, facilitates the monthly group, which is open to anyone who has or loves someone who has vision problems caused by macular degeneration, glaucoma or other conditions.
  • American Sign Language Class: Wednesdays, 12:45-2:15 p.m. Learn the basics of sign language including the ASL alphabet, numbers, finger spelling, gestures and grammar. Class is free, but seniors must be registered to participate. Call 440-279-2131 for more information.
  • Non Contact Boxing Class: Mondays, 2-3 p.m. Begins Jan. 23.
  • Chair Yoga: Tuesdays, 1-2 p.m. Begins Jan. 24.
  • Music Enrichment Group: Jan. 20, 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Non-Contact Boxing Class

Chardon Senior Center will be offering a non-contact boxing style fitness class on Mondays, beginning Jan. 23, from 2-3 p.m.

Mondays, 2-3 p.m. Starting Jan. 23, a new non-contact boxing style fitness class will be offered. Call to reserve a spot. The class will focus on strength, speed, balance, flexibility, brainwork and eye hand coordination through a variety of exercises and core conditioning. The goal is to improve overall fitness levels and to help maintain a strong healthy body while working on good posture and increasing core strength. Equipment is provided.

Chronic Disease Self Management

Chardon Senior Center is offering a class to help Geauga County seniors, 60 or older, with a chronic disease or long lasting health condition take charge of their health.

Seniors will get the support they need, find practical ways to deal with pain and fatigue, discover better nutrition and exercise choices, understand new treatment choices and learn better ways to talk with doctors and family about one’s health. Learn how to live a healthier life and maybe even reduce cost to the health care system, through the Six Weeks to Better Choices workshop series. Classes are geared to individual participants’ needs.

Sessions will meet for six consecutive Wednesdays, beginning Feb. 8, from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive in Chardon.

Snowshoeing in the Parks

Geauga Park District is offering free snowshoeing in the parks for Geauga seniors this winter. Participants will be provided with snowshoes and poles, along with an experienced guide. No prior experience needed. Dress in layers and wear outdoor boots.

Hikes are scheduled for: Jan. 12, The West Woods, 9465 Kinsman Road, Russell Township; Feb. 7, Observatory Park, 10610 Clay St., Montville; and Feb. 23, The Rookery, 10110 Cedar Road, Chester Township.

A bus will be provided to those seniors who would like transportation from the Chardon Senior Center to the park for a $4 fee. The bus will leave the Chardon Senior Center at 10 a.m. and return by 1 p.m. Seniors who drive themselves to the assigned park site should arrive no later than 10:30 a.m.

Bainbridge/Chagrin AARP

Jan. 3, 1 p.m.

The Bainbridge/Chagrin AARP Chapter 4527 will meet at the Bainbridge Town Hall, 17826 Chillicothe Road. Join for an interesting program and refreshments.

If the Kenston School system is closed due to the weather, the meeting will be also cancelled. Check local television stations for school closings.

Food and paper products will be collected for the Food for Friends food pantry as well as dog food, blankets and supplies for the Geauga Dog Shelter.
