AARP Smart Driver Course

Sept. 15, 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Refresh driving skills and know the new rules of the road at the new AARP Smart Driver Course being held at Chardon Senior Center. Volunteer AARP instructor Vin Fiordalis will present research-based driving strategies to help seniors stay safe behind the wheel.

Bring lunch, or ask to have one provided.

Cost is $15 for AARP members and $20 for nonmembers. Payment is given directly to the instructor the day of class.

Parkinson Psychosis Discussion

Sept. 19, 12:30-1:30 p.m.

Dr. Benjamin Walter, medical director, Deep Brain Stimulation Program, UH Cleveland Medical Center, will speak about Parkinson’s psychosis at the Parkinson’s Support Group meeting at the Chardon Senior Center.

He will address the non-motor symptoms that may be more unexpected and can cause people to experience hallucinations or delusions.

Light refreshments will be served. Sponsored by ACADIA Pharmaceuticals Inc.

Fall Prevention Awareness

Sept. 22, 11 a.m.

The Geauga County Department on Aging presents a day dedicated to helping seniors learn how they can lower their risk for falling and continue to live independently. The program will be held at Chardon Senior Center, 12555 Ravenwood Drive.

A panel discussion will take place at 11 a.m. with a UH Geauga therapist, Matter of Balance coach, personal trainer and Access to Independence representative. Each representative will talk for 10 minutes regarding their expertise on fall prevention and will take time for questions immediately following.

At 11:45 a.m., free balance screenings will be provided through the therapy department at University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center. Call the senior center for an appointment, 440-279-2131.

Lunch with ice cream dessert will be served at noon. Call to reserve a meal.

The Geauga County Sheriff’s Office will also provide an opportunity for seniors to dispose of their old unused or unwanted prescription drugs through the Prescription Drug Drop-Off Program. Drop them off at the senior center between 11 a.m. and noon.

Senior Trash Pickup Days

Senior citizens who live in one of the townships or villages listed below and have unwanted items that need to be picked up at their homes may sign up for trash pickup days.

Register with the Geauga County Department on Aging (GDA) by the cut off day or earlier. Once registered, seniors can be placed on the trash pickup roster. To receive trash pickup assistance, one must be 60 years of age or older and live in the village, township or city holding the pick-up.

There is a limit of 10 items per household and all items must come from the senior’s home. All items must be clearly marked for pickup.

For specific trash guidelines or to register for the pickup, call the Department on Aging at 440-279-2129 or 440-279-2130 weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Only registered seniors can be placed on the pickup list. When signing up, please have a list of items that need to be removed.

City Of Chardon

Sept. 27 and 28

Registration cutoff is Sept. 20. Universal Disposal will pick up items curbside on Sept. 30.

Middlefield Township

Oct. 4 and 5

Registration cutoff is Sept. 29. Do not leave items curbside. Items should be outside by the evening Oct. 3. Newspapers, magazines and cardboard are recyclable; separate them out for recycling at a later date.
