Tribe Reporters for the Day
Congratulations go to sophomore Alicia Perovsek and senior Michael Somrak, two of 25 high school students selected to participate in the annual “Tribe Reporter for a Day” program on May 8 at Progressive Field.
The Cleveland Indians and The Plain Dealer team up to offer this program to students interested in a career in sports writing, reporting, broadcasting or journalism. To be considered, students must submit a 500-word essay explaining why they want to be a journalist and how this opportunity will help their career aspirations.
Their day will include the opportunity to observe Tribe manager Terry Francona’s daily media briefing, interview Cleveland Indians team players and/or coaches in a press conference, listen to career background and advice from the PD’s Indians beat writer Paul Hoynes and receive two tickets to see the Tribe take on the Oakland Athletics on May 8.
Wings 2013 Opens May 10
Wings 2013, a series of three one-act, student-directed plays, will take the stage on May 10 and 11 at 7:30 p.m. in the Pat and Janet O’Brien Center for the Performing Arts.
This year’s workshop features three comedies: “13 Ways To Screw Up Your College Interview,” directed by senior Maureen Chalko; “Waiting For My Cyber Boy,” directed by senior Natalie DiChiro; and “The Fourth Wall,” directed by senior Cassie Kresnye.
The productions are the result of student leadership and talent. The hands-on experience is invaluable for learning the workings of theatre. Faculty members Shirley Ivancic Stall and Derek Green guided the students’ efforts.
Admission is $7, payable at the box office. Please join us for an entertaining evening.
Chemistry Challenge
Science teacher Chris Poulos has had a longstanding bet with his classes: If the class average on any test is at least 93 percent, he promises to treat the students to doughnuts, pizza or ice cream to reward their outstanding achievement.
Last week, his students in Block 7 became the first chemistry class to reach that impressive goal. Congratulations go to Mr. Poulos and his students for staying focused on academic excellence and having fun doing it in the final weeks of the school year.
Mane Event Raises $135,000
Let’s give a shout out to The Mane Event Motown! It was a groovy evening of tasty food and great moves on the dance floor with family and friends. After tallying all of the income and expenses, it can now be reported that the evening netted a supreme amount of over $135,000 for scholarships.
“What an evening!” said President Sr. Jacquelyn Gusdane. “Its success brought friends together, strengthened community and raised significant funds designated for scholarship assistance.”
A photo gallery of a record 485 clubgoers boogieing down is on the school website.
Special thanks to event chairs, Cindy and Ken Uveges and Paula and Tom Christopher, Mrs. Gina McVey and to the many volunteers who reached out and made everyone want to save the date for the next Mane Event sell-out on April 5, 2014.
Aquila Becomes Eagle Scout
Congratulations to senior Philip Aquila, who was advanced to the rank of Eagle Scout by the Boy Scouts of America on Sunday. For his project, Philip identified and wrote trail guides for two-day hikes of two sections of the Buckeye Trail. He also wrote an article about the recommended backpacking equipment for novices. The articles and guides will be featured on the Buckeye Trail website.
The Eagle Scout ranking, Scouting’s highest and most prestigious distinction, is earned by only 5 percent of boys who participate in the Boy Scouts.
Bloodmobile Collects 30 Units
The American Red Cross and NDCL’s Future Medical Careers Club thank all who donated in the third and final blood drive of the school year on May 3. According to the Red Cross, the almost 30 units of blood collected will provide life-saving help to more than 120 patients throughout northeastern Ohio.
This drive would not happen without the hard work of science teachers Carlotta Mack and Maureen Wahl and members of the Future Medical Careers Club. Due to the many activities on campus Friday, it was the first blood drive held in a Red Cross Bloodmobile bus.
A special thank you goes to the Chardon Zeppe’s for donating pizzas to the drive.
Annual Legacy Day
On April 26, more than 150 alumni and students united at the sixth annual Legacy Day, a luncheon celebrating the legacy of Notre Dame Academy, Cathedral Latin School, and NDCL.
The event included a memorabilia display from all three schools, a catered luncheon and great conversations as graduates reflected on their high school days. The oldest alumni in attendance were Lillian Brozik Hruska`37, Lillian Zamiska Homa `39, Tony Musca `51 and Frank King `52.

Seniors Sign Letters of Intent
Congratulations to senior athletes Corbon Angermeier and Kendra Zbinovec, who signed Division II national letters of intent this week.
Next year Corbon will continue his baseball career at Ashland University, while Kendra will throw discus and shot put at Walsh University.

Arts Night Showcases Seniors
On April 23, NDCL’s Fine Arts Center was buzzing with activity as parents, staff, students and friends celebrated the accomplishments of the school’s talented student artists at the annual Senior Art Exhibit.
Twenty-five senior artists created individual displays and were on hand to discuss their works with visitors. Music and refreshments completed the ambiance of this evening of excellence.
The exhibition was on display from April 23 to May 3.
