Zbinovec Reaches Medal Stand Twice at States
Congratulations go to recent graduate Kendra Zbinovec, who took second place in the discus and fifth in the shot put at the state track and field meet at The Ohio State University’s Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Zbinovec became the highest finisher in boys or girls history at NDCL when she finished as the discus state runner-up with a throw of 128-09. In her first trip to states last year, Zbinovec threw 116-02 and finished 10th.
“The difference between last year and this year was night and day,” Zbinovec said. “I wasn’t as nervous this year.”
At the Division II regional meet in May, Kendra finished third in shot put with a school-record throw of 40-10 ?. She broke NDCL’s previous record of 38-10 ? set by Mary Walter in 2008. Kendra finished first in discus with a personal-record throw of 137-05.

Summer Camps a Success
Fresh off the end of the school year, NDCL campers just couldn’t stay away from the opportunity to learn and have fun on summer break.
Three camps, STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), theatre and basketball, kicked off the first week of NDCL’s 2013 program offering prospective students the chance to make new friends, explore exciting programs and learn what it’s like to be an NDCL Lion.
From launching rockets to building robots, campers discovered that science can be fun at NDCL’s first STEM camp.
“I enjoyed science and technology a lot more than I thought I would,” said Angelo Capito from Notre Dame Elementary School. “I also learned so much in such a short time!”
Mathematics teachers Ericka Bella and Ashley Kelm designed the camp to give students a hands-on learning experience.
“It was nice to work with younger students who were interested in math,” said Kelm. “Their creativity, energy, and enthusiasm were contagious and inspiring.”
Campers had the opportunity to discover their talents in the newly constructed Pat and Janet O’Brien Center for the Performing Arts at theatre camp. Directed by Performing Arts Department chairperson Shirley Ivancic Stall and English teacher Derek Green, campers developed a theatrical sense of the actor’s primary tools: the body and the voice. Through physical activities and performance games, the actors explored the essential concepts of the art of theatre in fun and exciting ways.
Down the hall in the McGarry Gym, 86 boys ranging from third to ninth-grades participated in the NDCL Lions basketball camp. Boys head basketball coach and science teacher Chris Poulos conducted the camp with girls head coach and physical education teacher Joe Spicuzza.
Along with help from the boys’ basketball coaching staff, alumni and current players, the camp focused on having fun while teaching the fundamentals of the game.
“I love working with the younger kids,” said Poulos. “They are so willing to learn, are so energetic, and are just fun to be around.”
Coach Poulos and Coach Spicuzza are already looking forward to the 2014 camp where they can once again work with our future Lions.
“I am so glad I decided to come to camp this week,” said camper Dane Bersching. “It has been the best camp ever.”
