Happy Birthday Wishes
How cool would it be to ride a pony to school on the last day of school in June? Think about several grades sharing one classroom. Imagine how inconvenient it would be to use an outhouse instead of indoor facilities. One wouldn’t be able to see the nurse very often because she would only come once a month. What if only one hot meal a month was served in the cafeteria? Come travel back in time at Hambden Elementary School as it celebrates its 90th year in its present school building.
In 1923, Hambden Elementary opened its doors to students. The current red brick school replaced a wooden structure that housed students in grades 18. It originally consisted of only four rooms up and four rooms down. An outhouse was out back. Indoor plumbing came in the 1930s. Children rode to school in kidhacks, which is the name for small school buses, and carried their own lunches.
In the fall, we will celebrate 90 years at Hambden Elementary. The township is searching for information, pictures, recollections, reports cards and other memorabilia that will add a depth of understanding for current students. Especially of interest would be a favorite memory or two that people of their school days at Hambden; please include dates.
If you send us a picture you would like returned, please enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope. Any other items of memorabilia should be clearly marked with name and address so they can be returned after being on display. The address is 13871 G.A.R. Hwy. Chardon, OH 44024.
Thank you to the Chardon Schools Foundation for their assistance in funding this event. There will be reminders throughout the summer. Please contact Jamie Porter at jamie.porter@chardonschools.org with “Hambden Celebrates” in the subject line. Or, call the school with any questions at 440-286-7503.
Hambden Community Picnic
The picnic committee will be meeting again in June. It’s not too late to join the committee.
The picnic is Aug. 11 from 1-5 p.m. at the township park. There will be entertainment, a Chinese auction, children’s games, a bakery walk and prizes for children of all ages.
To donate an item for the Chinese auction, call Nadine at 440-286-3273 or drop it off at the township hall from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays.
Thanks in advance for everyone’s assistance in making a great picnic.
Memorial Day Observance
Thank you to everyone who was involved in the Memorial Day observance and for making it such a memorable morning. The parade was wonderful and the weather perfect.
Thanks go to Nancy and Kevin O’Reilly for being the parade marshals and Tommy Dottore for securing the loan of the convertible and driving it in the parade. All of our bands were wonderful as well.
Thanks go to Reverend John Dove and Pastor Andrew Boern for their moving prayers and to Bill Gertz for reading the names of all veterans at the memorial. Thank you so much to state Rep. Patterson for his moving speech at the church and to Dr. Larry Sangrik for putting together the video presentation at the church. It was wonderful.
Thanks also go to Hambden’s firefighters for their participation and for once again providing everyone with a wonderful pancake breakfast.
Last, but not least, thank you to parade coordinators Harley Smith, Dale Smith and Dave Heald. They kept everything running smoothly. We hope to see everyone again next year.
