A crash involving an SUV and motor scooter Sept. 1 in Newbury Township killed a man, according to law enforcement.
At approximately 1:50 p.m., a 2018 Ford Escape, driven by Zachary Matthews, 19, of Newbury Township, was southbound on Elm Road and stopped at the stop sign at state Route 87, said Ohio State Highway Patrol Lt. Larry Jones in a press release.
Paul Buttari Sr., 69, of Newbury Township, was driving a 2007 Honda Helix motor scooter westbound on state Route 87 when the Ford Escape pulled onto Route 87, said and struck the
Honda Helix, ejecting Buttari Sr., Jones said in the release.
Matthews was wearing his seat belt at the time of the crash and was not injured, Jones said, adding Buttari was transported by Newbury Township EMS to University Hospitals Geauga medical Center before being flown, via emergency helicopter, to UH Cleveland.
“He succumbed to injuries sustained during the crash,” Jones said in the release. “Buttari was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.”
Troopers were assisted on scene by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office and Newbury Township Fire/EMS and Route 87 was closed for approximately an hour, Jones said, adding alcohol was not a factor in the crash and it remains under investigation.
