Crews responded at 10:56 a.m. June 8 to a garbage truck fire after the vehicle pulled into Newbury Plaza in Newbury Township.
The driver, employed by WLE Trucking, noticed the truck was on fire and dove into the plaza at the intersection of state routes 87 and 44 before unloading the burning contents, said Newbury Fire Chief Ken Fagan.
“(The driver) dumped it away from everything in the driveway and we’re currently now spreading it out and putting it out,” he said.
The driver was not injured, and Fagan said she handled the situation well under pressure.
“The driver of the dump truck did a very good job dumping it away from anything,” he said. “She didn’t dump it in the middle of the road where there’s wires, she had the (wherewithal) to drive over to the parking lot and dump it in the driveway away from everything.”
Fagan said her quick actions likely limited damage to the truck, adding, “We give her an ‘atta boy’ for doing that.”
The cause of the fire is unknown.
