A new theater group called Curtain 440 will offer campers ages 6 to 16 the opportunity to perform in one of two Disney favorites — “Frozen Jr.” and “Beauty and The Beast Jr.” this summer.

The theater group — founded by local playwright and director Angela Miloro-Hansen and named for Geauga County’s area code — is partnering with Berkshire High School to host two summer theater camps in July.

Miloro-Hansen was one of a handful of part-time employees whose positions were eliminated by the Geauga Lyric Theater Guild Jan 2. She began planning a new theater group Jan. 3, Miloro-Hansen said in a phone interview Tuesday morning.

“I worked at a theater that was two minutes from my house. I ran the education department, I got to work with my family, so it wasn’t necessary for me to look at leaving,” Miloro-Hansen said. “But obviously that changed and it really seemed like the right time, when that change happened.”

The new group does not have a permanent home, but will partner with Cardinal Schools for a teen repertory show this spring and is making plans with area schools and theaters for its fall season.

Miloro-Hansen hopes to put on five to six shows before the end of the year.

With her years of experience in directing plays and securing scripts, Miloro-Hansen is confident the group will continue to grow outside of Chardon, where her previous work was centered.

“The theater scene is so big here,” she said of Geauga County. “I was just working with Lakeland (Community College) and now with (a theater in) Chagrin on a show and it’s like in this area, there’s so many theaters and they’re all doing so well.”

“Frozen Jr.” is being offered for children and teens ages 6 to 16. The summer camp will run Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m., from June 10 to July 18, with performances held on the stage at Berkshire High School July 18-20.

Youth ages 7-13 will have the chance to perform in Disney’s“Beauty and The Beast Jr.,” featuring songs from the original animated and Broadway versions.

Camp will run Monday through Thursday, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. from June 17 to July 25, with performances July 25-27.

The fee for each camp is $250 and all registered students will receive a role and will participate in set, costume and prop design, as well as play theater games and make new friends, according to a press release from Curtain 440.

All rehearsals and performances for Curtain 440’s summer camps will be held at Berkshire High School on their stage (14510 N. Cheshire Street in Burton).

Registration for both camps can be completed at www.curtain440.com.
