Judge John Eklund of the 11th District Court of Appeals of Ohio has been elected by his fellow judges to serve as the court’s presiding and administrative judge through 2023.
“It is an honor and privilege to be selected to perform these roles, and I thank my colleagues on the court for their trust and support,” Eklund said. “I am excited to lead the work of our judges and staff in delivering fair, impartial and timely justice, and making sure we are responsible fiscal stewards of the people’s resources that fund our operations.”
Eklund was sworn in to serve on the 11th District in July 2021, having been appointed by Gov. Mike DeWine to fill a vacancy on the court. He won election to complete that term in 2022.
As presiding judge, Eklund will preside over all court sessions on three-judge panels of which he is a member and is responsible for convening such meetings of the court’s judges as he deems necessary for discussing and acting upon administrative issues of the court.
He also will act as the court’s representative at executive sessions of the Ohio Court of Appeals Association.
As administrative judge, Eklund will perform duties incumbent upon the office as prescribed by the Rules of Superintendence for the Courts of Ohio, and will be responsible to the chief justice of the Ohio Supreme Court for the 11th District’s observance of the rules.
In addition, he will have full responsibility and control over the court’s administration, docket and calendar.
“At bottom, the fundamentals have not changed,” Eklund said of his new role. “I think the most important thing my colleagues, our staff and I do is to establish, maintain and enhance Ohioans’ confidence in our system of Justice. I am enthused to be able, perhaps, to be better positioned to help shape what that means for our court.”
Prior to his appointment to the appellate court, Eklund was in the private practice of law for almost 42 years with the Cleveland law firm of Calfee, Halter & Griswold LLP. From 2011 until 2021, he served as state senator for Ohio’s 18th Senate District, which includes all of Portage County and most of Lake and Geauga counties.
