Steven Kurzinger, the Willowick man arrested earlier this year in connection to the murder of Alexandra Kurzinger in Chardon, was indicted by a Geauga County grand jury Aug. 29 on murder charges, according to court filings.

Kurzinger, 36, is facing one count of aggravated murder and one count of murder, both unclassified felonies, and one count of having weapons under disability, a third-degree felony, according to the indictment.

He was arrested June 25 after his former spouse, Alexandra, was shot dead outside her place of residence in Chardon. The two had five children together and records in the Lake County Court of Common Pleas show multiple years’ worth of divorce proceedings, with a pretrial hearing having been scheduled for the day after Alexandra’s death.

Kurzinger allegedly confessed to the crime, but not to law enforcement, police previously reported.

“The additional charges are based upon evidence of premeditation and that (Kurzinger) was under a firearm disability at the time of the murder due to an outstanding warrant for his arrest for a failure to appear for a hearing the previous day in Painesville Municipal Court,” Geauga County Prosecutor Jim Flaiz said in a Sept. 3 email.

Kurzinger purposefully, and with prior calculation, caused another person’s death, the indictment read, noting he had a firearm while “committing the offense” and that it is subject to criminal forfeiture, “in that the property was used or intended to be used in the commission of the crime.”

The firearm was knowingly acquired or used despite still being under disability and while being a fugitive at the time, the indictment said, adding the firearm in question is a 9mm Taurus handgun.

Kurzinger currently remains in the Geauga County Safety Center on a $5 million bond and will be arraigned 10 a.m Friday in the Geauga County Court of Common Pleas, Flaiz said.
