The Geauga Park District is in the stages of building a new lodge for Swine Creek Reservation in Middlefield Township.

The Geauga Park District is in the stages of building a new lodge for Swine Creek Reservation in Middlefield Township.

Due to the fact an earlier construction bid for the lodge came in higher than expected, the GPD Commissioners approved a transfer of funds at their March 8 meeting for the plans to be redesigned to fall in line with the funds budgeted.

Director John Oros said the new lodge would be about 1,500 square feet if commissioners approve the project, and construction would begin later this spring with the facility available for public use by reservation when finished.

The proposed budget for the project is $500,000, which would come from the district’s land improvement fund supplied by tax dollars, Oros said.

The $100,000 supplemental appropriation passed unanimously Monday was for the 20% contingency if the project is approved, he said.

“We received an initial lowest bid on the project of $614,000. The project has been redesigned, will be rebid and presented at a future board meeting,” Oros said in an email March 9.

The 412-acre park features the district’s sugar bush and provides access to the southern section of The Maple Highlands Trail. The trail, most of which is paved, winds through Middlefield and Chardon for biking and hiking.

Swine Creek Reservation, at 15004 Hayes Road, has 11 trails totaling 6.1 miles, according to the GPD website. Recreation areas include a playground, activity field backstop, sand volleyball court, horseshoe pits and tetherball.
