A Geauga County grand jury indicted South Russell resident Emmanuel Mathews May 15, charging him with attempting to cause physical harm when he reportedly shot David Mattai at Centerville Mills Park in Bainbridge Township last month.

The indictment follows a May 5 ruling by Chardon Municipal Court Judge Terri Stupica, who found probable cause in the case and bound it over to the grand jury.

Mathews was charged with felonious assault, a second-degree felony, according to Geauga County Court of Common Pleas records.

“The grand jurors further find and specify that Emmanuel J. Mathews had a firearm on or about his person or under his control while committing the offense and displayed the firearm, brandished the firearm, indicated that he possessed the firearm, or used it to facilitate the offense, as specified in section 2941.145(A) of the Revised Code,” the indictment said.

Mathews is being accused of shooting Mattai, of Auburn Township, April 21 after Mattai reportedly interjected in a political conversation Mathews was having with another individual.

Mathews’ arraignment is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. June 10 in Geauga County Court of Common Pleas.

No judge had been assigned to the case as of press deadline.
