The Geauga County Public Library is planning a party to celebrate it 50th birthday on July 12.
Lori Weber, the library system’s marketing and communications officer, unveiled plans for a party on Chardon Square last Thursday during a Chardon City Council meeting.
Rather than having individual celebrations at libraries in Bainbridge Township, West Geauga, Middlefield, Chardon or the library stations at Ledgemont and Newbury high schools, the library system plans to celebrate its golden anniversary with a big county-wide birthday bash showcasing library services from 3-9 p.m. July 12 on Chardon Square.
The event will feature free ice cream, baseball activities and an appearance by Indians owner Larry Dolan, the local attorney who made the library board motion that established the county library in 1963, Weber said.
The party is going to feature music, prizes and giveaways donated by the Cleveland Indians, she added.
Events and activities include an ice cream social, a clown and magic show, sidewalk chalking for kids, various prizes, a speed pitch game with radar and an interactive wall where guests can write how the library has helped them, Weber said.
The library’s bookmobile will be parked at the square to provide people with assistance in downloading free magazines and book applications onto their smart phones, Weber said.
Dolan also plans to appear, she said.
County Sheriff Dan McClelland and deputies will bring along Rick O’Shay, the sheriff’s office miniature horse.
The party will be held in conjunction with a Friday concert at the pavillion on the square, featuring a ’60s rock band, Weber said.
