Buoyed by the support of Ashtabula County, state Rep. John Patterson, a Democrat, was elected to a second two-year term representing Ohio House District 99, according to the final unofficial results of the Geauga County?Board of Elections.

Patterson soundly defeated his opponent, Nancy McArthur, a Republican, by about 6,000 votes in Ashtabula County, but he fell short in Geauga County, where McArthur lives, by about 1,000 votes.

“As I have for the past two years, I am deeply interested in the welfare of constituents in Geauga County,” Patterson said Tuesday night when reached via cell phone.

He added: “I’m very grateful for their support. And very humbled by it, as well. I plan to continue to work hard every day.”

Patterson lives in Jefferson.

McArthur said she wasn’t surpised at the outcome.

“We figured that probably would happen,” she said late Tuesday evening. “We’re a little disappointed, but we were the underdog. We ran a good race.”

She added she was pleased with the results in Geauga County.

McArthur is a Chardon city councilwoman and vice mayor. She has served five years on Chardon City Council and was re-elected in November 2013 to a four-year term on the council, garnering the second most votes in the open election.

The 99th District consists mostly of Ashtabula County, northeastern Geauga County and the city of Chardon.

Republican Sarah LaTourette, daughter of former U.S. Rep. Steve LaTourette, defeated Joseph Lanese, a Democrat, for the Ohio House District 76 seat.

She soundly won Geauga County, 15,487 votes to 7,111. The percentage in Portage County was 65 to 35, also in favor of LaTourette.
