The following is a sampling of the calls handled by the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office Jan. 9-15. In total, the sheriff’s office handled 313 calls during this seven-day period.
911 PROBLEM
Jan. 11
10:43 p.m., Tilden Road, Troy. This came in as a 911 text. The female was very evasive on the phone. The female stated she was texting her boyfriend and then said she was playing on her phone. She asked that deputies not respond. Dispatch told her a deputy would be coming to check on her. Female inadvertently text 911 while attempting to text a friend. No problems at this time.
EXTRA PATROL
Jan. 15
8:13 a.m., Ravenna Road, Auburn. Last two mornings an older model Chrysler, possibly grey or silver, pulled out of the compliant’s driveway and also the neighbor’s driveway who is out of town. They do have their hazards on. Complainant does not believe it is not a paper guy. Today he had hazards on and just going really slow down the street. This happens around 7:30 in the morning. Request extra patrol for that time and check vehicle out.
FRAUD
Jan. 9
11:46 a.m., Main Market Road, Troy. Caller’s credit card number was used fraudulently to purchase $1,000 worth of gift cards Dec. 15 at the Home Depot. Contact was made with Brooklyn Police Department where the purchases were made but Brooklyn advised the report should be taken by my deputies. Complainant noticed two $500 charges on his credit card from the Home Depot store on Brookpark Road. Report taken.
Jan. 12
2:21 p.m., Woodin Road, Hambden. Elderly female received a phone call from a male pretending to be her grandson. He was requesting $1,000 in cash. The complainant would like someone to stop in and speak to her mother about this phone scam. She was very upset by the call. No money exchanged hands. Female advised it was a scam. Provided with Deputy’s number if she has anymore calls.
JUVENILE PROBLEM
Jan. 14
6:41 p.m., Bass Lake Road, Munson. Kids walking from the YMCA to the Circle K. They are walking right out in front of cars. This has been going on for weeks. Complainant is worried that the kids are going to get hit by someone not paying attention. Deputy advised. No walkers observed at this time. Spoke with YMCA staff, who stated they will send out an email to members cautioning them about allowing their juvenile children to walk to the Circle K. They are also considering banning the bringing in of common Circle K items, such as “Polar Pop,” which would help curb the walkers.
PROPERTY DAMAGE
Jan. 10
1:56 p.m., Thwing Road, Chardon. A large hawk just flew into the caller’s window, shattering both panes of glass. The caller needs a deputy to take a damage to property report so he can call his insurance company. Deputy arrived on scene and spoke with homeowner, who advised a hawk struck his front window and damaged it. I reviewed the area and determined that a bird did hit the window and damaged it. Documentation only. Nothing further was requested.
SUSPICIOUS
Jan. 9
8:45 p.m., Sutton Place, Munson. Caller heard the doorbell, went to the door and no one was there but there are footprints near the front door all the way around to the walk out and into the woods. She doesn’t see anyone now but she does not want to go outside and look. Deputy responded. Suspects were at a different address on Sutton Place. They were supposed to go across the street to a friends. All three will go to the complainants in the morning to apologize.
Jan. 13
11:59 a.m., Beechwood Drive, Newbury. Vacant house directly across from the listed address – multiple males in a black pickup, possibly a Dodge, are removing things from the inside of the house. Caller confronted the subjects and they alleged the bank sent them but it only appears they are taking plywood. The caller took a picture of the males and the truck with a temporary tag. He will call back if they leave the house. Caller will attempt to access the picture of the plate. Deputy responded. The men were hired by Safeguard Properties to remove moldy panelling. All “plywood” reported that was removed is, in fact, moldy panelling. Male showed the responding office the email he received from the company with the address and work order.
Jan. 13
8:26 p.m., Farley Road, Parkman. Caller states there are a couple people in his backyard walking around. They are not very far from caller’s house. Deputy advised. Caller has all his doors locked. He is home with his elderly mother in-law. People have flashlights walking around close to the caller’s barn. Caller states one of them just pried the door to his barn open. Caller states he has guns in the home, caller has them with him. Caller doesn’t see the people any longer, but the dogs are barking still. The dogs are loose on the property, they are supposed to be somewhat friendly. Caller is in the kitchen, caller has his hunting guns by the front door. Deputy responded to the above address in reference to suspicious persons on the complainant’s property attempting to gain entry into the out building. Upon arrival, the deputy and the Middlefield Police Departments units checked the property, but did not locate any fresh shoe impressions in the snow around the buildings or anywhere else on the property. After checking the property, deputy spoke with the complainant, and advised him of the same.
TRAFFIC CRASH
Jan. 12
12:13 a.m., Tavern Road, Burton. Amish buggy crash in front of house. Unknown injuries, caller states two people with flashlights, seems like horse is injured. Ohio State Highway Patrol available but they are coming from Painesville. Caller advised some people came and took the buggy and horse and headed south on 168. Deputy followed the tracks south on 168 and lost them north of Nash.
