An early morning head-on collision April 15 on Madison Road in Montville Township left two drivers injured and transported to University Hospitals Geauga Medical Center, according to the Chardon post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

OSHP received a call at about 5:46 a.m. reporting a two-vehicle crash just south of Hautala Road.

Matthew Marthers, 39, of Waterford, Pa., was driving a 2005 Buick Lacrosse northbound on state Route 528. A 2005 Buick Regal, driven by Anthony Ellis, 46, of Rome Township, was traveling southbound on State Route 528 and drove left of center in an attempt to pass another vehicle, striking the Buick Lacrosse head on, according to an OSHP press release.

Marthers, who was wearing a seat belt, suffered serious injuries and was transported by Hambden Fire Department EMS to UHGMC, the patrol said in the release.

Ellis, who was not wearing a seat belt, was transported by Montville Fire Department EMS to the same hospital, the release said.

The crash remains under investigation, and speed may have been a factor, the patrol said.

OSHP Sgt. Scott Schweinfurth said by phone April 17 there was no indication alcohol was a factor in the crash.

According to the Geauga County Sheriff’s Office blotter, the crash was reported by a delivery truck driver. The vehicles appeared heavily damaged, with one overturned.

Due to weather conditions, neither Marthers nor Ellis could be flown to University Hospitals’ main campus in Cleveland at the time of the crash, OSHP said in the release.
