Raymond A. Horn Award

The Berkshire Local Schools congratulates Burton Elementary School fourth-grader Dean Derrow for recently being named the 2022 recipient of the prestigious Raymond A. Horn Award for outstanding achievement among those who have overcome academic challenges. He has demonstrated excellent advancements in reading skills by putting more than an additional 100 hours of his own time to continue mastering the skill, and as a result, has shown great improvement. For winning the Walter Horn Award, he was given a medal, a certificate and pizza party for him and a handful of friends. The Berkshire Local Schools, along with Dean’s parents and teachers, are extremely proud of his efforts.

Computer Hardware Stations

Eighth-graders in Miss Mele’s Computer 8 class recently finished a hardware stations project-based learning experience. Students started out by learning how to research a motherboard’s specifications to identify hardware that was compatible with the motherboard in a Google Doc. Along with a partner, students then completed a Google Form and worked inside a computer for each station.

Students had to determine the model number of the motherboard, find its specifications online and then determine which hardware given in the Google Form was compatible with the motherboard at the station. After they completed their form, students received the hardware for that station to put into the computer. Once the hardware was in the computer, students called Miss Mele over to check if they were successful or to help them adjust if they did not have it quite right.

Stations included researching and putting in a CPU, hard drive, RAM, expansion card and DVD drive. The learning experience taught students how to find and replace compatible hardware for upgrading, fixing or building a computer.

Artwork Selected for Exhibition

Berkshire High School student Caeley Powell’s artwork has been selected for display at the upcoming Ohio House of Representatives High School Student Art Exhibition. The Berkshire Junior/Senior High School Art program was invited to participate in the annual program, with only one student artwork able to be selected for the statewide showcase.

Caeley’s impressive portrait titled “Captured at Edgewater” will join student art submissions from each of the 99 Ohio House districts. Her combination of hard work, artistic ability and excellent character make Caeley an outstanding ambassador of the program and school.

A formal reception recognizing students from around the state for their artistic achievement will be held at the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts in Columbus on Oct. 1.
