Longo Scholarship Recipients
Seniors Tara Barcikoski and Abbi Connors have been named recipients of the annual Longo Homecoming Scholarship. Berkshire High School recently recognized both students during an assembly in the school gym on Oct. 13.
The Longo Homecoming Scholarship Fund is made possible through the generosity of Paula Boykin, a Berkshire High School graduate as well as the first homecoming queen of Berkshire High School.
All graduating seniors were given the opportunity to apply by writing a response to the following prompt, “What is the biggest challenge facing the U.S. today and how would you remedy it?”
The scholarship is typically awarded to one graduating senior in the amount of $3,000 towards tuition at a two year, four year or technical school of his or her choice. However, due to their impressive submissions, both students were given a scholarship award by Ms. Boykin. Barcikoski was 2022’s first Longo Homecoming Scholarship winner in the amount of $1,000, and the second winner was Connors in the amount of $3,000.
Students Study Immigration
American history students in Ms. Bomback’s and Mr. DeWeese’s classrooms are currently studying immigration during industrialization. The students recently participated in an experiential learning simulation in which they are immigrants from various European nations working through processing at Ellis Island. Students were each assigned an individual with a backstory of why they were coming to the United States. They then had to go through a brief medical exam and legal interview to determine if they could enter the country based on their character’s circumstances for immigration.
The lesson helped to drive home the push and pull factors that brought millions of people to the United States and helped to develop an understanding for what that process was like for many of the country’s ancestors.
