Traps for Tricky Turkeys

Shortly before the Thanksgiving holiday break, Mrs. Hauser and Mrs. Boyd’s third-graders read “How to Catch a Turkey” by Adam Wallace and Andy Elkerton, authors of the beloved “How to Catch” book series.

The third-grade teachers created a creative and memorable project-based learning activity inspired by the tale of a group of students attempting to catch a turkey running loose in school before the Thanksgiving play. Students were divided into groups of three and challenged to design a cage that would catch and hold three turkeys. Each group was given toothpicks and mini marshmallows to construct their cages. The finished products were very impressive and sure to hold those tricky turkeys.

40 Book Challenge

Sixth-graders at Berkshire Middle School have demonstrated a love of literacy through a series of reading-focused challenges and activities. Each classroom recently embarked on a friendly competition against the sixth-graders of Grand Valley.

Mrs. Burnett and Miss Corlew’s students have taken on a thrilling 40 book challenge, facing off against Miss Corlew’s sister, Emily Corlew, an ELA teacher at Grand Valley, and her students. Each student will aim to read 40 books by the end of the school year, with the winners receiving a pizza party supplied by the opposing class.

The purpose of the challenge is to instill a love of reading and create a positive community of learners. Students are able to read books of their choice from a variety of genres, with books of more than 250 pages counting as two books. So far, Berkshire students have read over 650 books since the beginning of the year.

The 40 book challenge has not only sparked a love for reading but has also created a bond between the students and the two schools.

The sixth-graders also participated in a “book tasting” event prior to Thanksgiving break to venture into the different genres they are required to read for the challenge. With the help of the Burton Public Library, students were able to “taste” a variety of books and recognize the number of books they have access to at the public library. The dining experience was a fun, interactive way to get students submerged in different genres of books.
