Relay for Life

Those interested in purchasing luminaries in honor, support or memory of a loved one who battled cancer should contact Aimee Green at aimee.green@berkshireschools.org for a form. Forms are also available on the team Relay for Life Page: http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR?pg=entry&fr_id=79485.

The luminary ceremony will start around 9 p.m. for those who wish to be present for the reading of the names and lighting of candles. Plans are in the works for the popular annual “Princess Party” at Relay. Details will be presented as soon as they are known.

Survivor Forms are also available by contacting Ms. Green. The Survivor Dinner will be held during Relay in the Bond Building and the Fort Huntsburg Band will play. Relay will also feature the Berkshire High School marching band and other talented individuals from the area.

Science Olympiad News

Students from Burton Elementary School competed in the annual Science Olympiad at Case Western Reserve University on March 4. Seventeen students placed throughout the day. Students returned after a long day of competing with second place medals for Evania McCandless and Mia Pirichy in Crime Busters; third place medals for Chelsey Hare and Caeley Powell in Mystery Design; and fifth place medals for Vicky Spanos and Brooklyn Pope in Circuit Wizardry.

Beyond that, however, students placed in several other events earning sixth place in What Went By for Abbi Connors and Lanie Wadsworth Tree Identification for Marissa Tiber and Jordyn Wichert, and Ready-Aim-Fire for Sophia Laudato and Keaton Silva; eighth place in Bird Identification for Sidney Schaden and Jordyn Wichert and Disease Detectives for Evania McCandless and Marissa Tiber; and a ninth place in Bridge Building for Miles Miller and Louis Filby.

Burton Elementary School competed against very large schools, some of which have STEM instruction as part of their regular daily schedule. Above all, the kids had so much fun all day. In some cases, students filled in without any preparation for events that were unfilled or needed students to compete and still they enjoyed and placed.

Advisor Mrs. Amy Hochschild is excited for next year and looks forward to creating a committee to help students have even more fun with these events. She is hoping to have parents, teachers, board members and administrators join in because 25 events are numerous adventures to explore.
