Senior Awards Night 2016

Congratulations to members of the class of 2016. The evening of May 25, seniors displayed their senior shadow project accomplishments and during the formal ceremony, scholarships were given to graduates and they received academic and athletic recognition by the teachers. Over $500,000 in grants and scholarships were awarded to members of the class of 2016.

Power of the Pen

On May 27, eighth-grader Victoria Anderson participated in the state Power of the Pen competition in Wooster. Qualifying for this competition was an accomplishment; only 10 percent of Power of the Pen competitors are able to qualify for the high ranking competition. At the state meet, Victoria competed in three rounds of writing against many of the best writers in the state.

Burton Borscht Bowl

On May 25, Burton Elementary School third-graders participated in the first ever school “Borscht Bowl.” Representatives from the three third-grade classrooms competed in an academic challenge of the history, culture and language of Russia.

Students were fortunate to have had Mr. O’Neill visit the third-grade classrooms each week throughout the year and he was able to teach the students an introductory course in Russian culture. The culmination of their efforts was the Borscht Bowl 2016.

The three teams – Mrs. Kriz’s Meteors, Mr. Allison’s Spartans and Mrs. Klingman’s Torpedoes – impressed the audience with their knowledge. The Meteors took home the gold medal, winning a plaque for their classroom. Spartans and Torpedoes were silver and bronze medal recipients, respectively. The Burton Elementary School third-grade classes and teachers would like to extend a special note of appreciation to Mr. O’Neill for providing a wonderful enrichment activity.
