Nature Scopes Binocular Blitz

The fifth-graders at Burton Elementary School concluded their yearlong binocular Nature Scopes program through Geauga Park District. Throughout the year, the students have learned to use binoculars for distance and also as “microscopes” to see very small objects close up.

Students went outside to look at abiotic and biotic forms around the school and in the classroom. They took hula hoops out to mark areas for study and then examined dirt, bugs, vegetation and anything else they could find.

The amazing staff and volunteers of Geauga Park District came out in the fall to instruct the students in proper use and

setting up the binoculars for personal use. Then, in January, they visited again to do an astronomy program where the students used their binoculars in stations to learn about planets, constellations and stars. They learned that a white star is much hotter than a red or blue star.

Many thanks go to the generous donors who contribute to the program every year. The school appreciates everyone’s kindness. The students were once again able to keep the binoculars they were using all year. Now they can explore the amazing, sometimes “unseen,” magic in the world around them forever. Thanks also to all the parents who came on the trip with the school. It was nice to share the experience with everyone.
