B.E. to CLE Field Trips

The Burton Elementary School PTO has introduced a new initiative called “B.E. to CLE.” The primary goal of the program is to provide each grade level with a field trip to a different educational opportunity in the city of Cleveland. Some examples include Severance Hall to hear the Cleveland Orchestra, The Great Lakes Science Center and Playhouse Square.

The school believes that this is an amazing opportunity for students, especially those who have not experienced this aspect of Cleveland before. The school would like each grade level to have a designated yearly destination, so that by the time the current kindergartners leave Burton Elementary School, they will have visited seven different venues in the city of Cleveland, which would be an amazing opportunity for the students.

The PTO plans to help with this program by providing funding for the transportation expenses associated with the field trips, which is $700 per grade level. Fortunately, the PTO has recently become a 501c3 organization, which means it can accept donations that are tax deductible to the donor.

For those making a donation of $200 or more, the PTO will list the donor’s name or the name of the business on the back of its fun day Tshirts at the end of the school year in recognition of everyone’s support.

If anyone, or someone one knows is interested in supporting a particular grade level, or just would like to make a donation, please contact the school office by calling 440-8343380 ext. 1101 or by emailing the PTO at info@burtonpto.com.

Longo Scholarship Awarded

Paula Longo Boykin, an alumna from the Berkshire class of 1968 who went on to create and run for nearly three decades a successful commercial design firm, visited Berkshire High School on Sept. 13 to present the annual Longo Homecoming Scholarships to two deserving seniors who are graduating in May and pursuing post-secondary education.

Boykin shared Berkshire memories, life lessons and personal anecdotes with juniors and seniors before presenting a $1,000 runner-up scholarship to senior Anna Loveland, and the $3,000 award to 2016 winning recipient, senior Justin Politzer.

Thank you to Mrs. Boykin for her continued support of Berkshire Schools and its graduating seniors. Each applicant of the 2016 scholarship also received a gift from Boykin and her family.

The Wall That Heals

It’s often difficult to teach history to young children who haven’t yet experienced much of the world, but Burton Elementary School fourth-grade social studies and science teacher Jen Wadsworth found a way to make history come alive with the visit to The Wall that Heals, a traveling replica of The Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C.

She offered an enrichment extension in which her students would visit the wall, take some pictures and write about their experience with the intention of pulling all of their reflections and images together in a slide show.

Students posed for pictures in front of the mobile memorial, but more importantly, they reflected about grandparents and great uncles who fought in the Vietnam War, the large number of casualties, those who are POW/MIA and the loss that comes with the seriousness of war. Thank you, Mrs. Wadsworth, for providing the students with a meaningful learning experience.
