Great Lakes Cheese Visits
Third-graders in Mrs. Troph’s class at Cardinal Intermediate School see cheese in a whole new light, thanks to a recent visit by Great Lakes Cheese. Company representative Jennifer Francisco visited the students recently and discussed the cheese making process. She explained that cheese starts out as a liquid – milk – and then through various processes, transforms into the solid cheese that they eat. The discussion tied into the class’s recent science lesson on solid, liquid and gas states of matter.
Students were also shown how workers dress at Great Lakes Cheese. They were given protective caps and samples of Cheese made at the Hiram plant.
Art Invaders Take Over
The truly amazing, sometimes creepy, but always helpful friendly invaders art display took over the Middlefield Public Library on April 17. The art show featured work from Jordak Elementary School second-graders and Cardinal Intermediate School third- and fourth-graders.
Akron STEM Day
Zombies beware award-winning zombie fighters are now protecting the halls of Cardinal Middle School. Cyndle, Emmeline, Hunter and Lacey received the top award in zombie fighting at The University of Akron’s Goodyear STEM Career Day on April 18. The contest was one of many events that they and 3,000 other middle school students from across Ohio participated in during the experience.
Sixty CMS students from Mrs. Casavecchia’s, Mr. Sherman’s, Ms. Avalon’s, Mrs. Boles’ and Mr. McCandless’ classes attended the career day put on by the Goodyear Tire Corp. Prior to warding off zombies, students spent the day following a schedule, visiting stations representing colleges and corporations that provide education and careers in engineering. Students explored nanotechnology, took a virtual walk across a penny, made silly putty, tested racing tires and completed engineering aptitude test questions.
“We are so grateful to the middle school PTSA for providing transportation to this worthwhile trip,” says sixth-grade science teacher Stephanie Boles. “This was a great experience for our students to see how the components of STEM exist in the real world and what potential college and career opportunities lie ahead for them once they graduate.”
Grit Award
Congratulations to senior Bobby M., who was awarded the Grit Award by the Positive Coaching Alliance at the organization’s Cleveland Chapter Youth Sports Awards on April 20 at Hawken School.
The Grit Award is given to a student-athlete who “personifies the characteristics of resiliency, determination and a never-give-up attitude. The athlete receiving this award has overcome a significant life challenge, demonstrating grit both on and off the field, inspiring everyone around them by their actions and their attitude.”
Bobby was involved in a near-fatal accident after his eighth-grade year. After multiple surgeries and grueling rehab, Bobby returned to play both football and basketball at Cardinal High School. He was the starting tight end on this year’s 8-2 football team, and he was also awarded CVC Second Team and All-Geauga First Team after the season.
Cardinal is one of several local high schools and youth sports organizations that has partnered with Positive Coaching Alliance to promote “better athletes, better people.” PCA is a national organization founded in 1998 by Jim Thompson. It’s mission is to replace the “win at all costs” mentality with the idea of the “double-goal coach” and to help develop “triple impact competitors” who strive to make themselves better, their teammates better and their sport better.
Open Enrollment
Cardinal Schools will hold open enrollment for the 2015-16 school year from May 1 to Aug. 1. Open enrollment is for students who live outside of the district and do not currently attend Cardinal schools.
Open enrollment acceptance is based on class sizes and is granted on a first-come, first-served basis. Applications will be available in the board office.
State Of The Schools Address
The Cardinal Local School District encourages all community members to attend the State of the Schools address at 5:30 p.m. April 30 in the middle school cafetorium. The event is free and open to the public. Celebrate the successes achieved and discover the exciting changes and opportunities that lie ahead.
The address will put the focus back on Cardinal on the students, on the teachers and staff, on the community in order to keep the district moving forward. Superintendent Scott J. Hunt will highlight the changes made within the district for the year and how doing so benefitted students and the blueprint for future improvements.
There are many exciting and innovative plans in place for the 2015-16 school year that will only continue to set Cardinal apart from the rest. Information will be shared on the: Straight-A grants/distance learning classroom; transformation; Huskie Nation Foundation; new school district logo; new website; and small school collaborative.
A showcase of student and school achievements starts at 5:30 p.m., with the formal address beginning at 6 p.m.
