Accelerated Reader Projects
Students in Mrs. Cardinal’s third-grade classes recently brought their favorite book characters to life. They created life-sized characters, paper bag puppets, comic strips and stages based on characters and plots from their favorite Accelerated Reader books. All of the students then presented their creations to their classmates.
The project is designed to help students improve their public speaking skills while tapping into their creativity to help bring books to life.
Beekeeper Visits Ecology Club
The Cardinal Intermediate School Ecology Club was buzzing with excitement on April 23 after a visit from beekeeper Christine Kayla from John’s Country Nursery in Middlefield. Kayla, who is the former Geauga County bee inspector, visited the third- and fourth-graders to discuss the importance of pollination and the role bees play in it.
“The Ecology Club is embarking on a look into the importance of our own environment in sustaining a balanced and thriving ecosystem,” Ecology Club advisor and fourth-grade teacher Charlotte Torre explains. “Pollinators happen to be an integral part of any environment, without those types of pollinating organisms we would not have plants which provide the base for all other consumers in food chains and food webs.”
Kayla spent about an hour with the club, using classroom volunteers to help explain the hierarchy of beehives and the relationship between the queen, worker and drone bees. Students asked many questions and were fascinated to discover how beehives are created and maintained. One student even got to dress in a beekeeper suit to help demonstrate the safety precautions beekeepers take when tending to their hives.
Kayla supplied the students with crackers and a sample of honey to taste. She also left them with a coupon for a free pack of seeds at John’s Country Nursery that they can plant and help the bees continue their pollination mission.

Tdap Requirement
The Ohio Department of Health requires that a dose of Tdap be administered before a student enters the seventh grade. Tdap is essential for protection against tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (whooping cough).
The dose is intended to be administered as a booster dose for students who have completed the required doses of the initial series of DTaP/DT/Td. Therefore, current sixth-graders will need to show proof of having received this booster dose before they can return to school in the fall.
Tdap vaccine is available from the doctor, clinic or healthcare provider. All county health departments also provide Tdap vaccines.
If one chooses not to have his or her child vaccinated, please request a waiver form from the school office. If one’s child has already received the Tdap booster vaccine please make sure supporting documentation has been sent in.
