JES/CIS Science Day
First- and second-graders at Jordak Elementary School participated in Science Days in the intermediate school gym on May 11 and 13. Students rotated through six different stations, some of which included experimenting with a life-sized kaleidoscope, lifting a heavy weight with a couple of fingers and discovering organisms under the microscope.
Select fourth-grade students were assigned to each station to explain the science experiment and teach the younger students how to conduct it.
Kindergarten Word Wizards
Kindergarten students at Jordak Elementary School transform into “Word Wizards” every week to help enhance their vocabulary skills. Each week, teachers divide the students up into separate groups and the students visit different teachers to do fun activities that help strengthen their use of words.
“We’ve found this to be a very effective method of helping students develop their vocabulary skills,” says Jordak Principal Kelly Bearer. “The activity gives students a nice break and they really enjoy traveling from room to room, too.”
Cardinal Freshman Wins Science Award
Congratulations to Jordyn G., freshman at Cardinal High School, for placing in the top 10 for the Young Scientist Award. Jordyn wrote an essay on how chemistry colors our world.
This year had the widest selection of counties and students ever to enter the competition hosted by The Northeastern Ohio Section of the American Chemical Society.
Out of the top 10 students, there were eight seniors, one junior and one freshman. That brilliant, and lucky, freshman is Jordyn. She was the only winner in Geauga County.
Jordyn said, “I was very proud of myself. I had fun doing more research on the topic.”
Newton’s Laws
Newton’s Laws of Motion are put to the test in Mr. Sherman’s eighth-grade science class at Cardinal Middle School. Students recently studied the three laws of motion and then applied what they learned in a classroom experiment. Using the three laws and all of the vocabulary discussed in the class lesson, students had to construct roller coasters.
“It always helps students understand a concept when you can take something they’ve learned in a book and apply it in a real setting,” says Mr. Sherman. “The experiment gave them a better sense of Newton’s Laws and how they work, plus they had a lot of fun constructing the roller coasters they came up with some pretty creative ways to apply the laws and all of the vocabulary.”
Spirit Week
Students at Jordak elementary and Cardinal intermediate schools participated in Spirit Week May 11-15. Each day of the week had a different theme and students could choose whether or not they wanted to participate.
The week is designed to encourage and promote school pride. This year’s spirit days included: Favorite Team Day, Hat Day, Crazy Hair Day, Twin Day and Huskie Pride Day.
Fourth Grade Graduation
The fourth-grade graduation ceremony will be held May 29 at 10:30 a.m. in the CIS gym. Achievement awards, outstanding accomplishment awards and diplomas will all be handed out at the special ceremony.
We’re so proud of all of the students’ accomplishments this year and are looking forward to seeing them succeed as they move on to the middle school. Congratulations students, Huskie Pride.
