STEM Career Day
Sixth-grade students at Cardinal Middle School took over the hallways on May 22 for STEM Career Day to educate others on all of the careers available in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields.
Students researched careers they were interested in on the website iOn Future and then selected one to present. Students were instructed to create a display about their selected career that contained two paragraphs one on the education needed to be in the profession and the other containing salary information with a graph to support the research.
Each student was required to have a 3D model and an item to pass out. Some students also chose to dress up like their career. Students set up their display on a desk in the hallway and then presented their findings to fellow students, teachers, staff, and parents and grandparents who came to visit.
8th-Grade Finance Fair
Cardinal Middle School and eighth-grade math teacher Melody Barber have received commendations from Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel for participating in the Real World, Real Money financial literacy program on May 22. Eighth-graders participated in the event sponsored by the Ohio State University. Students were each given a career and salary and then visited different stations where they had to use their “paychecks” to pay for items like mortgages, cars, groceries, gas and other various real-world expenditures.
Teachers say the event is a real eye-opening experience for the students.
“As they go through the stations and their money starts to dwindle they start to get a sense of why it’s important to have a budget and manage their money,” says eighth-grade science teacher Joe Sherman. “Students also start to realize the difference between needs and wants and that they don’t always get the job, or clothes or other material items that they want money only goes so far. They usually tend to walk away with a whole new appreciation for their parents and even us as teachers!”
World Turtle Day
World Turtle Day was on May 23 and kindergarten teacher Ashley Derecskey decided to turn the holiday into a class lesson. Mrs. Derecskey brought in an African sideneck turtle and a red eared slider for her students to observe. Derecskey’s nephew also came to class and presented facts about turtles and reptiles, discussing their natural habitats, food, life cycles and predators. Students observed snapping turtle shells and then painted a turtle shell, drew, and labeled what they noticed about each shell. After the presentation and observation, students read books and then wrote about the life cycle of turtles.
