First-Grade Water Experiments

At the beginning of the school year, students in Mrs. Wells’ class at Jordak Elementary School told her they wanted to learn about water. Learning about water happens to be a first-grade science standard and students learn about the physical property changes of water. So, consultant Claire Zurbuch prepared an experiment and brought in several materials for students to measure water in a solid (ice cube), liquid (water) and gas (air in a balloon) form.

Mrs. Wells says, “The students had a great time working with partners, measuring and watching what happens to the physical properties of an ice cube as it warms up. The students learned new vocabulary, including solid, liquid, gas and molecules.”
