Seniors A-Tack the Map
As Cardinal High School seniors commit to a college in Ohio or out of state, they will “a-tack” an Ohio map and place a pin on the town where they will begin their post-secondary schooling. Students will also have their pictures taken and placed on the guidance webpage.
“We thought this would be a fun way to recognize our students as they make this important choice in their lives,” says guidance counselor Jill DeRamo. “It will be fun for everyone in the building to have an idea where our graduates are heading after graduation, so we are all excited to see where our students go.”
A huge thanks to Angelica W. for volunteering her time to create the Ohio map for students to “a-tack.”
CO2 Cars Race
The middle school science classes are at it again with their cool classroom experiments. Seventh- and eighth-graders in Mrs. Casavecchia’s and Mr. Bronson’s classes tested carbon dioxide cars after spending time in class researching designs, making a template, creating and painting their cars. Recently, students raced their cars in the gym and used iPads to gather data for distance and time. Students then used the data to calculate velocity, acceleration, momentum and the force from their CO2 canister. Michael Hickox and Carsten Weizer, Cardinal graduates and former students of Mr. Bronson, filmed the races using a high speed camera, GoPro and a USB camera.
“The Three Billy Goats Gruff”
Kindergarten students got a little help with their classroom lessons from a popular children’s story. After reading the book “The Three Billy Goats Gruff,” students then answered questions about story elements such as characters, setting, title, author and problem/ solution – these are all words children are learning about in class.
The children also got to be actors and actresses and act the story out. Students chose which character they wanted to be and performed in front of the class. They worked on listening skills and being a good audience while others were performing. Some even acted as the bridge itself, because the setting is just as important as the characters.
Along with acting out the play in front of their peers, students also participated in a puppet activity where they colored, cut and glued the characters and the setting from the book onto Popsicle sticks. When they were finished they met with a partner(s) and used their puppets to do a retelling of the story in their own words, which helps students improve their sequencing skills. Students used the story throughout the week to assist with lessons in math, writing and reading.
Teacher Courtney Dyer says, “It was awesome. Students really get into being the mean old troll and all of the voices for each size billy goat.”
Animal Classifications
Students in Mrs. Horvath’s first-grade class recently turned into scientists. Students are learning about the different classifications of animals (reptiles, mammals, birds, fish, insects, amphibians), so school consultant Claire Zurbuch, aka Mr. Z, set up an experiment where students visited 10 stations in the classroom to view an animal, some of which were alive and some were not. They then determined which classification the animal belonged to. Students had a blast. Thanks, Mr. Z.
