Students Create Future City

Eighth-grade students are hard at work in Mr. Kruse’s Future City enrichment course. Students are applying research and engineering principles to create a model of a city 100 years in the future.

Engineer Michael Hickox, a Cardinal alumnus, has been involved in the process as a volunteer project mentor. Students have already completed an in-depth research essay and virtual component and are now hard at work on the city model.

Congratulations to students Avery V., Jonathan Z. and Katie S. for being selected to present the project at the Future City state competition in Columbus on Jan. 16.

Officer Visits Law Class

Middlefield Police Officer Justin Nevison visited a Law and You class recently at Cardinal High School. Officer Nevison spoke to students about law enforcement, difficult situations officers face and potential careers in the field. Students were also able to ask questions.

Teacher Eric Cardinal says the visit was very informative and helped students put a human face on policing.

Ugly Xmas Sweater Contests

It’s not Christmas without an ugly sweater party and staff at Jordak Elementary School and students and staff at Cardinal Middle School all got to participate in the festivities. At Jordak, nurse Christine Gardner took home top honors, while kindergarten teachers Courtney Dyer and Ashley Derecskey took home second and third place, respectively.

At the middle school, the competition was a little more intense with each grade level and staff members participating. Top grade level winners were whittled down to one from each grade and those winners then went head-to-head against each other.

The top student winner was sixth-grader Mattison M. and the staff winner was Miss Orlando. They both received a cookie decorating kit as their prize. Grade level contestants included: fifth-graders Madison H., Josh S. (winner) and Sophia S.; sixth-graders Justine B., Mattison M. (winner), Elinor R. and Olivia W.; seventh-graders Sam L. (winner), Daisy R. and Daisy Y.; eighth-graders Kaitlyn & Paige B., Michael M. (winner), Sydney S. and Emma T.
