Students Study Space
The CMS gym was transformed Jan. 14 for an adventure into space. As part of the Nature Scopes Program presented by the Geauga Park District, fifth-graders at CMS rotated between three different stations. The stations included sun and stars, moon and planets, and constellations and deep space objects.
The students were able to demonstrate magnitude using flashlights, explore planets using their binoculars and explore the star lab. Fifth-grade teacher Gregory Cicero says the students had fun and deepened their understanding of space.
Bingo Helps with Numbers
Kindergarten students in Mrs. Derecskey’s class had fun recently using their classroom lessons to help them with a favorite game: Bingo. Students worked with a partner to identify which numbers were being depicted in each square. Rather than numerals, numbers were represented by 10 frames, tally marks, numbers, dot patterns and number words.
Students had to visually identify and differentiate the differences of each card shown in order to put a marker on their space.
“In addition to the math they were reviewing, they had to utilize their social skills because the game took a lot of cooperation,” says teacher Ashley Derecskey. “The kids all had so much fun trying to get their Bingos.”
Tech Brings Science to Life
Students are studying asexual reproduction as one of their eighth-grade standards and for the AIR test, so those in Mr. Bronson’s class used iPads to make stop motion videos of binary fission for prokaryotes and mitosis for eukaryotes. Mr. Bronson says this project is a good way for students to get some hands on experience and while combining creative expression with technology.
Straight “A” All-Stars
The Cleveland Cavaliers and Westfield Insurance have recognized all of the third- and fourth-grade straight A students at CIS as part of their Straight “A” All-Stars Program. All third and fourth-graders who got all A’s in the first grading period received a personalized Straight “A” All-Stars certificate, a Straight “A” All-Stars drawstring bag and a congratulatory letter.
In December, three of these students were selected to receive a special T-shirt and two tickets to a Cavs game. The Cavs and Westfield Insurance will do it again for those who receive all A’s in the second grading period as well, so keep up the great work.
