Future City Receives Award

The eighth-grade Future City team received an honorable mention for Best Use of Water Resources Engineering at the Future City Competition in Columbus on Jan. 16. During the competition, the group was interviewed by judges and then delivered a presentation about its city, design, infrastructure and how it addressed this year’s critical problem of waste management.

Group advisor Mr. Spence said the students’ innovative use of water resources in their city earned them their special recognition. Congratulations to team members Katie S., Avery V. and Jonathan Z., and a special thanks to Cardinal alumnus Michael Hickox for serving as a volunteer engineer on the project.

1st-Graders Conduct Experiments

Students in Mrs. Horvath’s first-grade class recently conducted experiments involving the different states of matter. Students must be able to identify matter in a liquid, solid or gas form so to help them get a better perspective. Science consultant Claire Zurbach stopped by with some experiments. Students watched as ice cubes changed their state of matter from a solid to a liquid, and then measured liquids and gases by using graduates.

Mrs. Horvath says, “This hands-on experiment used measurement to illustrate the different properties of matter and was a great chance for students to explore the difference between solids, liquids and gases.”
