100 Days of School Celebration
Cardinal has officially hit 100 days of school and to celebrate, kindergarten and first-grade students and teachers dressed up like 100-year-olds. Students did activities in each of the classrooms, including stamping 100 words, making crowns, stamping 100 finger prints, using 100 cups to make a structure, playing a counting game up to 100, finding and matching on a 100s chart, building something using 100 Unifix cubes, predicting how much water would fill a cup using 100 drops of water and how many drops of water fit on a penny. It was quite a day and teachers are confident the students have the counting to 100 thing figured out.
Science and Snacks
Who knew science and snacks went together? Seventh-graders in Mrs. Casavecchia’s science classes recently used chocolate sandwich cookies to demonstrate how the relative positions of the Earth, moon and sun and the motion of each cause phases of the moon in support of the science standards. The activity allows students an additional means of visualizing the phases of the moon, provided the opportunity for social interaction and culminated with a tasty snack.
Start With Hello Week
Elementary students are learning just how powerful the word “hello” can be after participating in various activities as part of Start With Hello Week sponsored by the Sandy Hook Promise. Students wore green Start With Hello wristbands all week and even designated a day to wear green – the color of the Start With Hello movement.
Students held a “No One Eats Alone Day” where conversation starters were placed on cafeteria tables so students could chat while they ate as a way to help all students feel included. Students also participated in “Hey Day” where they were encouraged to greet other students by their first name in class, the hallway or lunchroom. Empathy posters students designed to illustrate that character trait will be on display in the buildings soon.
“It was a successful week for our students and really helped students connect with the “Empathetic” part of our Huskie Pride program,” says Jordak Principal Kelly Bearer.
