Grandparents Day
Dozens of proud grandparents filled the hallways of Jordak and Cardinal Intermediate schools on May 5 and 6 for Grandparents Day. Students and their grandparents enjoyed breakfast, professional photos, a tour of the buildings and classrooms, and shopped at the book and plant sales in the Jordak gym. Thanks to the Cardinal PTA for their hard work in organizing the event, and to all of our grandparents who took time to come visit we hope you enjoyed your morning.
Phi Beta Kappa Winner
Cardinal High School is proud to announce that senior Cole Z. has been chosen as this year’s Cleveland Association of Phi Beta Kappa award recipient. Cole was selected by Cardinal High School staff to be the award recipient based on his academic achievement and scholarship. The society requires members to maintain a grade point average in the top 10 percent of the class.
“He’s had an outstanding academic career,” says high school guidance counselor Jill DeRamo. “Cole is at the top of his graduating class, excels in both his classes here at Cardinal and at Ohio State University and he’s involved in extracurricular activities and programs. He’s very well-rounded and a worthy choice for this award.”
Cole was one of 114 outstanding graduating seniors from Northeast Ohio to be recognized by the chapter at their annual Scholastic Awards Banquet on May 1. The award is considered by many to be one of the most prestigious awards a high school student can receive.
“Being recognized for my accomplishments and hard work is very rewarding,” says Cole. “Seeing all of the other highly successful award recipients was eye-opening.”
Cole credits some of his academic success to dedicating what he calls a “large amount of time” to community service and challenging himself to grow personally and academically. He enrolled in The Ohio State University Academy Program last fall. The Academy program is the Ohio State implementation of College Credit Plus and is a partnership between Ohio State, Cardinal High School and the students enrolled in it.
“Due to these college classes being online, I had to take my education into my own hands and stay motivated in order to succeed,” Cole says.
He will finish this year’s program with 29 college credit hours and a 3.92 cumulative GPA.
The credits and GPA will carry over for Cole this fall as he officially begins his full-time, post-secondary education in Columbus at The Ohio State University. He will be a member of the Humanitarian Engineering Scholars Program majoring in electrical and computer engineering. He plans to apply to the Honors Program in the spring of 2017.
Cole says, “I hope to have a career in computer engineering, where I hope to contribute to society in a positive way with technology.”
Students Attend FilmSlam
Cardinal High School foreign language students recently took an interesting field trip to the Cleveland International Film Festival’s FilmSlam. FilmSlam aims to educate students about evaluating and critiquing messages they perceive while viewing films. Students watched several short films, in either French or Spanish, and took notes paying close attention to cultural differences. Students then had to write a film review in the target language describing the movie and discussing cinematography, music and the sustainability of the film to American audiences. Students enjoyed the experience and the assignment challenge.
CVC Honors Band
Congratulations to the high school students who were selected to play in the CVC Honors Band concert on April 28. Members included Megan M., Ella R., Morgan S., Faith P., Jocelyn B., Michelle M., Abby M., Brittany C., Korey V., Anna A., Kathryn D., Aidan W. and Mitchel S.
Mr. Florjancic, the band director, says the students “played with great musicality and put together a tough program with only two rehearsals.”
Each year, top band members from each CVC school are invited to be part of the honors band. Students generally only have a couple of practices before the concert. This year’s event was held at Kirtland High School.
