Walter/Horn Awards

On April 27, the Geauga and Lake County Educational Service Centers honored 20 students and 25 educators during the annual Walter/Horn Awards Ceremony at Auburn Career Center. The group includes two Cardinal teachers and one Cardinal student.

The R.A. Horn Outstanding Achievement Award was received by student Emily D. Nominating principals Kelly Bearer and Julie Fulton say Emily has made huge strides in her school work this year and call her sweet and kind, noting she goes out of her way to help other students in her classroom.

“Emily is an asset to the classroom as a peer model and she is able to be a great role model,” say Bearer and Fulton.

The Franklin B. Walter Outstanding Educator awards were given to Lila Nappier and Kelly Oblaczynski. Nappier is an intervention specialist at CIS who is praised for her preparation and communications with students, staff and families.

Also nominated by Ms. Bearer and Mrs. Fulton, the pair says, “Mrs. Nappier always takes time to lend a helping hand, listen to a student share a special story, greet students and staff as they arrive to school and keep a smile on her face.”

Oblaczynski is an employee of the Geauga County ESC and intervention specialist in the STARS classroom at Cardinal Middle School. Oblaczynski spent the month of April raising awareness about autism at the middle school with various positive behavior projects.

Her nominating administrators say, “Kelly’s incredible initiative and strong dedication to her students and families is inspiring. She strives to find ways for her students to be included within the total school environment.”

Barber Receives Teaching Award

The Cardinal Local School District’s gifted intervention specialist Melody Barber was recently honored as one of this year’s Greater Cleveland Council of Teachers of Mathematics (GCCTM) Outstanding Mathematics Educators. Mrs. Barber has been with the Cardinal School District for 30 years. She taught math prior to stepping into the gifted coordinator role for the 2015-16 school year. Nominating administrators say Mrs. Barber has always displayed a high degree of integrity, responsibility and ambition, going out of her way to assist colleagues and students alike. Her dedication to education and to the district are admired by many here at Cardinal. Congratulations, Mrs. Barber.

CHS Students of the Month

Congratulations to the May Cardinal High School Student and PBIS Student of the Month: junior Emily N. and senior Trey H.

Emily’s nominating teacher calls her very “mindful,” saying she always emails to get assignments when she misses class and seeks out extra help if she needed. She is also kind to others and is known to go out of her way to help others when she can.

Trey’s nominating teacher says he goes above and beyond when it comes to demonstrating Huskie pride. He is willing to sit with, talk to and assist students that are new to the district or may feel left out. Teachers are always amazed by how he will strike up a friendly conversation with other students who may be sitting alone. Trey often goes out of his way to be involved, including donating blood or showing his character during musicals and plays.

Congratulations, Emily and Trey.
