Debbie Seyer Award
Congratulations to Cardinal Middle School eighth-grader Hannah L. on being selected as the 2015-16 Debbie Seyer Memorial Award recipient.
Started in 2010, the award is given to an eighth-grade student who exemplifies the positive character traits celebrated in the life of Debbie Seyer. Students are nominated by a teacher, must be in good standing with discipline and attendance and meet the following criteria: demonstrate kindness to others and a willingness to help; perseveres through difficult circumstances and still maintains a positive attitude; serves as an affirmative role model epitomizing joy, enjoyment of life, good citizenship and sensitivity to the needs of others; participates in school and attends on a regular basis; strives for excellence; and exemplifies the “carpe diem” spirit by making the most of each day. Congratulations, Hannah.
Friends of Mike Provides Lunch
A huge thank you goes out to the Fenselon family and Friends of Mike for feeding Cardinal’s K-3 students, staff and volunteers on the last day of school. Everyone has come to love this annual tradition. It’s a huge undertaking to cook for that many people and the food is always so good. Thank you for taking time to do this; it is appreciated.
Field Day Fun
It was a fun and wet day for K-3 students on the last day of school. They got to participate in field day, enjoying several water activities at nearly a dozen different stations. Nearly every activity involved water using squirt guns to see which team could squirt the duck into the bucket fastest, racing blow up animals through sprinklers and using toes to “dive” for marbles in the swimming pools. Students were also able to participate in relay races and complete the bounce house obstacle course.
Thank you to the PTA and the parent volunteers who made the last day of school so fun for the pups.
Trailblazer Teachers
Two Cardinal High School teachers are in the midst of a year-long training program learning about technologies for use in their classrooms in the Trailblazer Teachers program, managed by Battelle Education and supported by Ohio’s Straight A Fund.
Last fall, math teacher Dan Chenoweth and social studies teacher Brian George were two of 16 teachers selected for the program from a pool of more than 100 applications on the basis of a recommendation from a local school administrator and their use of technology. The program consists of two parts. A four-part training curriculum provides educators with the effective strategies and tools for teaching in a modern classroom. The 16 teachers also collaborate with each other throughout the year to share ideas and practices.
In May 2016, each teacher published a set of resources for other schools to use and again presented their information at the Connect for Success conference June 13 and 14 in Columbus.
Additionally, the training focuses on ways to incorporate digital resources into the classroom. For example, teachers use an online quiz to learn what students know and then personalize teaching to cover each student’s needs. One major focus has been a method known as blended learning, in which students learn through a combination of in-person and online teaching.
“Dan and I were selected to take part in this program with the goal in mind of creating blended learning courses to demonstrate to other teachers how they can incorporate these techniques into their classes,” says George. “Over the course of three trainings, we learned from Dr. Lisa Hervey of NC State and also Greg Garner how to flip and blend lessons to incorporate technology. This has been a great experience and we are really honored to take part in the program.”
