Interact Club Collects Gift Cards for Thanksgiving

The Chagrin Falls High School (CFHS) Interact Club is sponsoring a gift card collection to support the Geauga County Jobs and Family Services holiday food drive. In past years, the club has collected canned food donations for the drive to feed families in need.

This year, the club will collect gift cards for Giant Eagle, Aldi and monetary donations to support families who will face food insecurity during the holidays. Cards and donations will be accepted from Nov. 7-18. High school students can bring donations to a box in the main office or to their homeroom teachers. The top two homerooms with the highest donations will win a free beverage and food item from Tiger Perk.

Checks should be made out to “Special Services of Geauga County” with “food for the holidays” in the memo line. While donations are accepted at the CFHS main office, they can also be mailed to Karen Sindelar at Interact Club Food Drive, 400 East Washington St., Chagrin Falls, Ohio 44022.

Gurney Service Learning Club Visits Hamlet Residents

The Gurney Elementary School Service Learning Club shared in some Halloween fun with the Hamlet Village residents on Oct. 31. Sixteen third-grade students, dressed in costumes and played Halloween Bingo with the residents.

“During the Bingo game, sometimes the residents helped me with the old fashioned words like –  bobbing for apples. I didn’t know what that was and they explained it to me. They said they did that when they were younger,” said third-grader Parker Lower. “I joined the Gurney Service Learning Club because I like helping the community and making things better for people.”

“The residents said they were surprised we bought our costumes from the store. They said when they were little that they made their own costumes,” said third-grader Vivian Self. “I really liked the Bingo game. I helped them find where the words were on the board.”

Teacher and club co-advisor Courtney Mooney reconnected with her third-grade teacher from Sands Elementary School, Mrs. Rice. “She taught me cursive and I loved when she would read aloud,” said Mooney. “Now I get to share my love of reading as a teacher in Chagrin Falls, just like her.”

Dale Tschappat, school counselor, is also an advisor of the club.

The students will be visiting Hamlet once a month during the school year.

Gurney Service Learning Club Visits Friends at Hamlet to Recognize Veterans

On Nov. 9, the Gurney Service Learning Club visited their friends at Hamlet Village. They remembered veterans as they worked on the Wreaths Across America project. Stories were shared and connections were made. The students even met educational aide Mike Kramer’s father, who is a veteran. Several of the Gurney Service Learning Club students have family members who live at Hamlet, so it’s always such a gift to have this special time together.

Students Recognized at Chagrin Falls Board of Education Meeting

At the Nov. 2 Chagrin Falls Board of Education meeting, students who completed the Bridging Program over the summer were recognized for maximizing their potential in their studies.

Bridging is the provision of content to students who have evidenced readiness to move into advanced coursework in math and/or science. It is designed to provide a “bridge” to avoid skipping over content through accelerating forward in coursework. It allows students to work in a blended learning environment, engaging in independent learning online, along with in-person teacher support and instruction, as needed. It assists current students and students who join the district.
