Proposed Calendar for 2019-20 School Year
The Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District will hold a public hearing for the proposed 2019-2020 district calendar. The open discussion will take place during the Board of Education Work Session on Nov. 7 at 6 p.m. in the Lewis Sands Community Room, located on the 7-12 campus.
What the Tech?! Parent Event
Parents from all schools in the Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District arrived on the morning of Oct. 6 for the district’s first “What the Tech?!” event. The event was designed for parents to learn more about how their student uses technology in and out of the classroom. The day consisted of four 25-minute sessions detailing different aspects of how students and teachers use technology at Chagrin Falls. Some sessions were interactive and required attendees to use smartphones to participate.
Parent Resources, facilitated by Nancy Kevern and Mike Daugherty, provided attendees with a website created specifically for the event. The site included tools, extensions and other tech resources parents could use when trying to help their student at home. The website can be accessed at bit.ly/cfsite1
Gurney Elementary School Spanish teacher Christopher Englehart led a session on how teachers and students use Google Classroom. Student tech intern Tori Hallwachs shared some of the artifacts she has created using the GSuite of Tools in her session titled “GSuite: a Student Perspective.” Brooke Campbell, middle and high school Spanish teacher, facilitated a game of Kahoot and Quizlet Live so that parents could experience first-hand some of the learning activities their students may talk about at home. Supplemental sessions included a Google Expedition to Iceland using virtual reality and a computer programming demonstration by computer teacher Carolyn Petite and her students.
Parent feedback was extremely positive. One parent said the event, “Reinforced what amazing opportunities our Chagrin Falls’ students have at their fingertips and how well prepared they will be for their next chapter. The presenter was an amazing young woman with a very bright future.”
Students Recognized at Board Meeting
Students from Chagrin Falls Schools were recognized at the Oct. 17 Board of Education meeting for their participation in the Northwestern University’s Midwestern Academic Talent Search (NUMATS) and Math and Science Bridging programs.
NUMATS is an above-level testing program that offers the PSAT 8/9, ACT and SAT to gifted students. The third- through eighth-grade students who participated in the NUMATS program and who had the highest score per grade level, per test within the school district were recognized for their achievement. These tests give information about the student’s academic ability that regular grade-level tests can’t identify. They also provide students with the rigorous experience of taking these high stakes assessments in a non-threatening environment.
Top-scoring students who took the PSAT 8/9 were Claire Rubin, Duncan Lyle, Abe Thurman and Shlok Bhattacharya. Top scoring students who took the ACT were: Katherine Quinn, Ryan Hill, Alexandra Holtz and Jackson Quinn. Top scoring students who took the SAT were: James Rose, Nathan Hill, Alexandra Holtz and Alexander Davis.
Bridging is an opportunity for students who show a readiness to move into more advanced coursework in grades 5-8 math or eighth-grade science to access content via a blended learning experience. Students avoid skipping content that may be missed by accelerating through the coursework through Bridging. Students engage in independent online learning and use teacher support and instruction as needed. The honorees were students who completed Math Bridging in summer of 2018 and are now taking Advanced Math courses for the 2018-19 school year. Students who took Advanced Science Bridging in summer of 2018 are now enrolled in physical science for high school credit as eighth graders in the 2018-19 school year.
Students who successfully completed a Math Bridging program include Alex Azzolina, Wade Daugherty, Alexis Kaseler, Corrina Barth, Emily Gasser, Emily Kohler, Benjamin Broz, Phoebe Gleeson, Trenton Latkovic, Evelyn Cravens, Erin Hartle, Daniel Perkins, Patrick Davidson, Abigail Herman and Maya Sutte.
