Power of Pen Team Soars to New Heights

On May 24, five Chagrin Falls School state-qualifiers for Power of the Pen traveled to the College of Wooster to write against hundreds of other qualifiers. The Chagrin Falls’ writers each wrote three rounds of writing and were scored against a state writing rubric. Each of the writers was awarded at least one “superior” rating for an individual piece, including eighth-graders Olivia Wirble, Kate Stephenson and Christina Bencin.

Seventh-grader Sophia Clark and eighth-grader Marie Kanzinger scored high enough to be entered into a fourth round of writing. Clark was in the top 25 writers for the entire state. Kanzinger had scores that were all in the superior range and was awarded first place in the state.

“We here in Chagrin should be so proud of these student writers,” said advisor Larry Richmond.

Assistant Superintendent Resigns

At a special meeting on Aug. 1, the Chagrin Falls Exempted Village School District accepted the resignation of Lisa Shannon, former assistant superintendent. Shannon joined the district in 2012 as director of pupil services and was appointed to the position of assistant superintendent in 2013.

Shannon has accepted a position as the director of special services at the Lake School District in Trumbull County. This is where Shannon is from and continues to have family in the area. District Superintendent Robert Hunt stated, “Ms. Shannon has done a great deal for our school district throughout her tenure and we are extremely appreciative of her work. We wish her well as she will certainly continue to make a difference for students and families at Lake.”

Board of Education President Kathryn Garvey said, “Ms. Shannon will certainly be missed.”

Shannon will be working on transition for the district throughout the month of August. The interview process is underway and a candidate is anticipated to be in place in the next two weeks.
