Students Meet Local Business Owners

Students in the Business Principles and Management class at Chagrin Falls High School got a taste of the world of entrepreneurship when they researched and visited local businesses. There are 18 students in the class, the majority of which are juniors and seniors who are interested in majoring in business in college.

In the class, students learned about the various types of business ownership: sole proprietorship, partnership, corporation, non-profit, franchise and co-operative. After learning the basics, students researched local businesses that fall into those categories and then presented their findings to the class.

After the presentation, the class created a field trip to local businesses called “Main Street CF.” Students decided where they would go, with the only requirement being that they visit only one of each type of ownership. This is the second year the class has completed the Main Street project.

The class visited four businesses for about 30 to 40 minutes each.

“We started our day right in the Tiger Perk Cafe where educational aide Beth Sonnhalter taught us more about our school’s own coffee shop,” said Chagrin Falls High School business teacher Nancy Vondrak.

They then visited the Chagrin Falls Popcorn Shop, which is a sole proprietorship on N. Main Street, then to Starbucks, which is a corporation on N. Main Street. They also met the manager of LifeAct, a non profit on Bell Street and the franchisee of Snap Fitness on East Washington.

Vondrak worked with the business owners to coordinate the schedule and said, “It’s a great way for the students to be immersed in our business community.”

OMEA Honors Band

Eight of Chagrin Falls High School’s band members have been chosen to participate in the Ohio Music Educators Association Honors Band.

The students are sophomore Maddie Ferguson, juniors Ryan Brackett, Alec Davis, Sara Hartle and Darya Rebeta and senior Tom Swift. They were selected from a group of 251 applicants from 38 area high schools.

The events associated with the Honors Band take place at Cleveland State University (CSU). Students will attend a seating audition on Nov. 14 to determine what chair they will play, meaning their rank associated with their skill level as related to the other musicians. On Nov. 15, students will rehearse and attend master classes. They will also listen to a short recital by CSU faculty. On Nov. 16, the students will perform a free concert open to the public at the Waetjen Auditorium at CSU at 4 p.m.
