Water Stations Installed
The new water bottle filling stations that have been installed this month at Gurney Elementary School will benefit all students and staff.
“Staying hydrated throughout the day is critical for everyone’s overall health and optimal energy level,” said Principal Rachel Jones.
The stations have a touchless sensor activation to fill bottles and they have filters that reduce unwanted water components and improve taste. They even have a ticker that can tell the school how many 20-ounce plastic water bottles have been saved from waste.
“We are so grateful to Lynn Turchan and our entire Chagrin Falls PTO for supplying our school with four of these stations throughout our building,” said Jones.
One School, One Book
Gurney Elementary School was featured in the cover story in the winter 2020 issue of “Read to Them” national newsletter. The story highlights the success of the school’s “One School, One Book” program over the last nine years, including the amount of support given to the program from the staff, parent volunteers and other sponsors.
It also details the incredible kickoff event each year when the front of the school building is transformed into scenes from the book, which take months to design and construct. From an academic and social standpoint, the article explains the strategic approach to selecting the book and integrating it into the teachers’ lessons.
As intervention specialist Amy Belew was quoted, “We promote literacy development as well as the arts, math, science and social skills through the books we select. You can always find a ‘teaching moment’ in a ‘One School, One Book’ book. The spirit of the One School One Book Program is to have parents reading to their children at home and, when all of us at school are reading the same book at home, it creates this amazing book club feel on a community level.”
The article is available on Gurney’s homepage of the district website.
